[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image source=”featured_image” img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]Who is Caleb Herring?

2023 Edge Caleb Herring is a 6’5, 210 lb player from Murfreesboro, TN.  Herring held offers from the likes of Georgia, USC, Auburn and Miami (FL). This commitment shoots Tennessee up to the 8th ranked class in 247sports composite. Caleb’s brother Elijah Herring also signed with Tennessee in the 2022 cycle and is a 3-star linebacker. Caleb was able to record 66 tackles, and a sensational 24 for loss to go along with 7 sacks. He excelled in coverage too, with 2 PBU and 2 INT for Riverdale high. The brothers helped lead them to the 6A region 4 playoffs, and an overall record of 10-2.

How does he play?

Caleb Herring shows tremendous athletic ability. He has plenty of room to add weight onto his frame, which he will need to do in order to play on the edge in the SEC. Herring’s biggest strengths are his ability to bend, make his way around the line of scrimmage. He is rangy and can make plays all over the field. That would suggest that he could play  more of a stand-up linebacker role. He has an explosive first step, making it difficult for tackles who will have to kick out to block.

How soon is he expected to contribute?

Caleb Herring will likely need to redshirt in 2023, as he will need to add weight to his frame in order to survive the physical nature of line of scrimmage play in the SEC. Though if he is able to get to Tennessee as an early enrollee, he may be able to put the weight on in time to contribute right away, as Tennessee will lose their top 2 LEO position edge players to graduation in Byron Young, and Roman Harrison.

This is a big get for Josh Huepel. As bigger named players in the state have gone elsewhere in recent cycles. Tennessee is the premier program in the state, but with its recent struggles the likes of LSU, Georgia Oklahoma and Alabama have all taken premier talent from the Volunteer state. Because of Huepel’s cultural foundation it seems things are changing and resonating with parents and recruits.

Herring shows his elite closing speed, as he sets the edge on a 3rd down against Gallatin:
