Fact or Fiction

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”307″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]In today’s Fact or Fiction I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

USC is the standard all should follow

Farrell’s take: FACT

What the heck am I talking about? To my knowledge the Trojans are the final team in the Power Five that hasn’t scheduled an FCS program after Notre Dame now has a game against Eddie George and Tennessee State. It’s a nice payday for FCS schools and it’s great to see a HBCU get a shot at the Irish but I just feel these automatic wins are too easy for teams that want to make the playoff. They don’t count towards bowl eligibility but you can bet it’s a win in the win column and doesn’t seem fair when schools like USC don’t do this. USC scheduled a FCS team in 2020 when they were supposed to play UC Davis but alumni freaked and they canceled it. Let’s keep away from these layup FCS games and not mask them as great exposure opportunities against high powered programs that just want blowout wins.

The NY Jets should go cornerback at No. 4

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I like Sauce Gardner a lot and Kyle Hamilton is a great player but I don’t think the Jets should go either way at pick No. 4. Why? They will get an absolute stud at No. 4 along the offensive or defensive line if they wait. Offensive tackles Evan Neal and Ickey Ekwonu are both expected to be top five picks as will EDGE stars Travon Walker, Aidan Hutchinson and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Take one of these, even with OL not the most pressing need on the roster, and hope Gardner somehow falls to No. 10 or jump on Derrick Stingley Jr. at No. 10.

The FSU portal numbers are startling

Farrell’s take: FACT

Our amazing Twitter feed @farrellportal put out a surprising statistic on Monday. Of the 18 players who have entered the portal since August 1, only two have landed at Power Five programs. And one was a kicker. What does this mean? It means that Jimbo Fisher gave up on the program a full year before he left, it means that Willie Taggart was a horrible hire and it means that Mike Norvell is now purging an awful roster. This is a recipe for a team falling from grace as fast as possible and it could take awhile for FSU to get back to competitive. FSU was 5-7 last season and the fan base is praying for a winning season in 2022 for the first time since 2017 when they limped to a 7-6 finish. It’s hard to believe this team won a national title in 2013. Less than 10 years later they are a disaster.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
