Who is Jonathan Denis?

Former 4-star G Jonathan Denis is from South Dade High school in Miami. He committed to Oregon out of high school. Denis has elected to follow his head coach Mario Cristobal from Oregon back home to south beach. Jonathan is listed at 6’3 296 and redshirted last season. Denis was a team captain for South Dade and made the Miami Herald’s Class 8A-6A All Dade team. Denis did not play his freshman year in 2020. He was lost for the season in 2021 with a knee injury. Denis has not taken any snaps college football snaps. He does still have a full 4 years of eligibility remaining. This is huge for both Denis and the Canes.

What does this mean for Miami?

It’s not a secret that adequate offensive line play has been a missing ingredient in Coral Gables in recent years. The feeling there now is that change is coming soon with the hiring of Mario Cristobol. The offensive line is his area of expertise. Denis provides a blue-chip player who could compete for a starting job right away at one of the two guard spots. He also worked some at center while at Oregon as well.

What kind of player is he?

Denis is a quick-footed swiss army knife in the interior of an offensive line. He is athletic enough to consistently pull in the run game but still utilizes good pad leverage when attacking the teeth of the defense.  The key here for Miami is that he can play all 3 interior positions. This will provide competition and possible upgrades across the entire interior line of scrimmage. QB Tyler Van Dyke will certainly appreciate that news.
