Who is Eli Holstein?

Eli Holstein is a 4 star QB in the 2023 recruiting class. He was the Louisiana football player of the year in 2021, and led Zachary High school to the 5A Louisiana state championship. He has ideal size for a signal caller at 6’4 and 222 lbs. Eli chose the Crimson Tide over the likes of Ohio State, Georgia, Texas A&M, LSU, and Penn State among others. He was committed to Texas A&M from June of 2021 until March 2022. Eli’s father Scott played at LSU and his older brother Caleb is a redshirt sophomore QB at Louisiana Tech.

Where does Eli fall in the QB room?

Well on paper he would come in behind both Ty Simpson and Jalen Milroe who are both highly rated QB prospects who have come in before him. Milroe redshirted in 2021, and would theoretically be draft eligible after Eli Holstein’s freshman season. However if Ty Simpson was to win the job, he came in just a class earlier which means Eli would have to sit for a couple of seasons or transfer. In addition, as a prospect Eli doesn’t quite have the ceiling the other two players appear to have.

Impact for Alabama

The Tide will have a bevy of options to compete for the starting job next season after they lose Heisman trophy winner Bryce Young to next years NFL draft. Competition helps bring out the best in athletes, and Alabama has used that formula under Nick Saban to the beat of six national championships and three Heisman trophy winners. Each of the three prospects bring something a little different to the table in terms of skill set as well, which will allow OC Bill O’Brien to have flexibility in how he would like his offense to run in 2024. The bigger impact is the flex for Alabama that they are able to so easily flip commitments from SEC rival Texas A&M, and earn a pledge over LSU for a legacy player.

Player Comparison

Eli Holstein compares in many ways to former Alabama QB AJ McCarron. He is not flashy, does not have an elite arm but he wins. He also has the knack for making the right decision, and has excellent ball placement. Holstein threw 29 TDs and just 6 interceptions as a junior for Zachary. In terms of athleticism he is more of a pro style guy who can maneuver the pocket rather than an athlete that will make plays off script. He is the ideal prospect for a pro-style offensive system.
