Fact or Fiction: The Arch Manning Edition

July 13, 2022

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_column_text]

Fact or Fiction:

Arch Manning is a 3-star QB

Farrell’s take: FICTION

This is the world we live in. Take one sound bite, compress it, release it and go viral. Yes I said if scouts received film of Arch Manning without his name on it they would rank him as a high 3-star. And then I said with the name, training and the fact that all Manning QBs pan out, I’d have him as a 4 star. I originally had him as a 5-star (see below) but after continued review of QBs in this class and a look at all of them, I’ve changed my mind. But he’s not a 3 star prospect. He’d just be rated that way by everyone if he name was Arch Smith.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_column_text]

Fact or Fiction:

Arch Manning is overrated because of his name

Farrell’s take: FACT

This can’t be disputed. He’s No. 1 in the country by most because he’s Arch Manning. The film and body of work doesn’t back up a No. 1 ranking and he’s nowhere near the talent of guys like Vince Young, Trevor Lawrence, Terrelle Pryor and Quinn Ewers before him. In hindsight Jimmy Clausen shouldn’t have been No. 1 overall. He had a solid career, was a second round draft pick and spent time in the NFL. Manning could easily do the same. But he’s overrated because of the name and hype.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_column_text]

Fact or Fiction:

I’ve changed my tune on Manning with no football being played

Farrell’s take: FACT

Does this make me a hypocrite? Does this mean I hate Texas? Would I have him ranked higher had he chosen Alabama or Georgia. The answer to all those questions is no. Every year since the Elite 11 started I’ve had the same process. Evaluate and rank before the Elite 11. Evaluate and rank after. And most of it on rewatching film as the Elite 11 is a nice showcase and all but doesn’t tell the entire story. I did that this year as well. Arch Manning didn’t participate but he still got re-evaluated as I compared others to him and then broke down the film again. Nico Imaleava didn’t participate either and I did the same thing with him. Manning didn’t hold up to my initial thought of a 5 star ranking. Imaleava did. I couldn’t care less what school either is going to nor who their uncles are. I re-evaluated and changed my mind.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
