Recruiting Round-Up: Alabama Snags Georgia Legacy

Recruiting Round-Up 7/17-7/18 Alabama secures UGA legacy

In today’s edition of recruiting round-up, we discuss: Alabama has been steadily climbing up the rankings like they always do at this point in the summer, before dropping the hammer and making their big move around early National Signing Day. Getting a commitment from a UGA legacy at RB is massive no matter how you slice it. SEC recruiting battles are bloody, and to go into Georgia and steal a legacy particularly after UGA finally got over the hump is massive. This is not only because of the acquisition of a good football player but also because of the symbolism of it. Alabama is still on top, and they are letting people know. Especially Georgia. It’s not panic time for the Dawgs, but this is a gut punch regardless.

Four-Star RB Justice Haynes Commits to Alabama

Justice Haynes is a 5’10 200-pound RB from Buford, GA. His father Vernon played for Georgia and went on to be drafted by the Steelers in 2002. Multi-sport athlete, also playing baseball. Haynes is a high-floor prospect. Very productive in high school. He has run for over 5800 yards and scored 72 touchdowns. He has tremendous contact balance. He is rarely taken down on the first contact and has good but not game-breaking speed. Good pass blocker, and catches the ball well out of the backfield. Excellent ball player and a future start at Alabama in my estimation. Though he will have to wait his turn.

Watching Justice Haynes is fun, but the LT (#70) steals the show on this play.

Four-Star TE Jelani Thurmon Commits to Ohio State

The Buckeyes got another weapon in Jelani Thurmon. The blue-chip TE checks in at 6’5 230. Thurmon is also a Georgia legacy so the Buckeyes pulled off a bit of a coup to get him to Columbus. Jelani’s mother is a former WNBA player who went to Georgia, and his father was an All-SEC linebacker for Georgia in 2004 and was taken in the second round of the NFL draft in 2005. Thurmon is an excellent athlete who is also a tremendous baseball player. He has tremendous catch radius and body balance. Difficult to take down, also was a tremendous defender in high school as well. Body is built ready to play as a freshman for Ohio State.

2023 TE Jelani Thurman (@jelani3345) is a phenomenal TE! Athletic, long arms with a huge catch radius. One of the best at hauling in contested passes in his class. Multi-sport athlete, you can see it when he moves he's very fluid. Jelani has also shown he's a willing blocker ?? pic.twitter.com/cJBubI3NzM

Four-Star Edge Rico Walker Commits to North Carolina

Walker checks in at 6’3 233 from Hickory North Carolina. Mack Brown did a great job making sure Walker did not leave home. Tremendous athleticism, basketball player. He plays both WR and Edge for his high school team. Very good body bend and uses his frame well to challenge tackles and is strong enough to bull rush as well. Very good at setting the edge, and tremendous in pursuit. This is the kind of young man who can contribute right away as his body is already heading in the right direction.

Rico Walker is a 6'4 230lbs Edge in the 2023 class North Carolina. Absolutely relentless on defense! His high motor and skill combined with his natural traits makes him a problem on the edge! Very athletic, i added some of his WR clips to show off his athleticism. Amazing Film ? https://t.co/SQXiKn6Y2I pic.twitter.com/je5IsoZa0f

Four-Star Linebacker Tackett Curtis Commits to USC

Curtis checks in at 6’2 220 pounds out of Many, LA. He was the Louisiana 2A defensive player of the year. He also played running back and was a return man for his high school team. He is an explosive athlete who has good play recognition. Hits, a hard sturdy hard-nosed traditional linebacker. Fits the Alex Grinch Speed D concept well. Brian Odom was key to this young man’s recruitment. This is a big get for USC, as when USC is elite they not only keep players home in California but also can go nationally and poach select players from other regions. Louisiana is a tough backyard to go into and poach a guy from LSU, but that’s exactly what Lincoln Riley was able to do.

That’s it for today’s edition of recruiting round-up! Alabama and Ohio State both take a bite of Georgia’s peach! Lincoln Riley took something in Louisiana it just wasn’t a job.
