Lanning came to Eugene, Ore. in 2022 after three years as the Georgia defensive coordinator. He led the Bulldogs defense to the 2021 National Championship in his final year in Athens. Prior to Georgia, he spent time at Pittsburgh, Arizona State, Sam Houston State, Alabama and Memphis.

The Ducks are 35-6 in three seasons under Lanning. They are coming off an undefeated 2024 regular season, a Big Ten Conference championship and a College Football Playoff berth. They entered the CFP as the No. 1 seed before falling to eventual champion Ohio State.

There had been interest in Lanning from other schools and the NFL. At the time Lanning said, “I think at this point, everybody can realize that I’m not going anywhere. So, I love what we have here. I’ve got three young boys that love Eugene. We have a lot of unfinished business that we hope to handle, and I’m enjoying the ride. So, this will be the place that I’m coaching at for a long. Long time as long as I continue to do my job.”
