Since being hired by Oklahoma prior to the 2022 season as a first-time head coach, Brent Venables, has found plenty of difficulty getting comfortable in Norman. The main reason for this is his 22-17 record, which for the Sooners’ program is far from what they are used to. With Coach Venables firmly on the hot seat heading into the 2025 season, one comment from yesterday’s press conference caught the attention of many.
Brent Venables: “Why am I calling the defense? Because I’m good at it… I’ve acted like my job is on the line for 30 years.” #Sooners

“I’ve acted like my job is on the line for 30 years,” has the potential to be a comment that is brought back numerous times during the Oklahoma season if things don’t improve in Norman. And while Coach Venables meant it in a broad manner, there is only one way that everyone else is seeing it.
Coach Venables’ mentality is correct and should be the way that every coach does his job every single season. But his job hasn’t been seriously on the line during a season for an extremely long time. Likely as far back since his time at Kansas State as a grad assistant and linebackers coach back in the mid-1990s.
Coach Venables will be coaching for his job this fall, and he will be doing so against Michigan, South Carolina, Texas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, LSU and Alabama. 2025 will be different for him and it has to be, because if its not he will be looking for a new job in December.
