Some players take their jersey number very seriously. That seems to be the case with Cam Newton, who wore #2 during his days with Auburn. Those were obviously very successful days that included a Heisman Trophy and National Championship. So, when Newton was asked about a true freshman quarterback, Deuce Knight, wearing his number, he was very critical of the idea.

The comments were made on Newton’s podcast, 4th & 1 With Cam Newton.
“It’s a f— no for me,” said Newton. “You will not be wearing #2, especially not your first year. I just don’t want to nuke my product like that….it’s like, create your own legacy. I did.”
Newton added that part of his problem with this decision is Auburn’s lackluster quarterback play since his departure to the NFL.

“Because the quarterback play over the years at Auburn has been egregious,” he said. “It’s been satanic. It has been something that….I can’t even watch a game. And that’s a shot at all players who have played and all coaches who have allowed them to play.”
A few points have to be made here. First, Newton’s number hasn’t been retired by Auburn. Secondly, Knight isn’t just any true freshman quarterback. Yes, he hasn’t accomplished anything at the collegiate level, but Knight is a five-star dual-threat quarterback who has the potential to be a star. But it seems as though the true freshman did not want to deal with the situation so recently a decision was made on his number.
NEWS: #Auburn freshman QB Deuce Knight will wear No. 9 for the Tigers.

Knight’s decision to change his number from #2 to #9 received a mixed bag of results from Auburn fans. But in the long run, nobody will care what number he wears as long as he plays up to his potential for the Tigers. And if he achieves that, it will be interesting to hear what Newton says at that point.
