Currently, the top four-seeded, conference champions get a first-round bye in the college football playoffs.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day thinks that should change according to On3 Sports.

The Ohio State Buckeyes beat Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame on their way to the National
Championship. They were coming off a tough loss to “the team up north” and many were doubting their
chances. In the first 12-team playoff, the Buckeyes bulldozed through the competition.

With the 2024 season in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look at some possible changes to the CFP
moving forward. Some would like to see the CFP include 14 to 16 teams with no byes in the first round.
The first change Day wants to see is the byes with the current 12-team format.

“I think it was clear this year that the automatic byes were a little out of whack,” Day said. “When you
see how it all shook out, I think they need to rethink that. I understand why, in the first year, it was done
that way. I think that if you win your conference, sure, you should get in. But you get a bye? I think
that’s a little much.”
Arizona State (Big 12) and Boise State (Group of Five) received first-round byes even though they were
not in the top four of the seedings. If Day had his way, Texas and Penn State would have received those
byes. With NCAA meetings coming up, we will have to wait and see if any changes come in 2025.
