Two months after many Ohio State fans wanted head coach Ryan Day fired, it was announced this morning that he had signed an extension that will keep him in Columbus until at least the conclusion of the 2031 season:

Ryan Day and Ohio State have agreed to a new contract. It's a seven-year contract that will keep Day as coach of the Buckeyes through the 2031 football season It will add three years onto his current agreement and will be valued at $12.5 million in total annual compensation.

Life can come at you fast in the world of college sports. Coach Day and Ohio State fans were at a very low point following yet another loss to Michigan on November 30th. Coach Day’s future with the Buckeyes was a popular topic of discussion, at least until the unexpected happened.

Ohio State began to play like many expected them to. Wins against Tennessee, Oregon, Texas and finally Notre Dame resulted in a National Championship. Just as quickly as despair engulfed Columbus, euphoria arrived. And rightfully so, Coach Day has now seen the benefits of it.

Obviously, this extension does not guarantee that Coach Day will be the head coach at Ohio State until 2031, but it does bring a needed level of stability at the coaching position. For the time being, he is here to stay.
