Ryder Lyons Scouting Report
Good height and very good weight with a solid frame that he can still add muscle to. Very good athletic ability, with good acceleration and very good change of direction and balance. Elite competitive toughness and courage showing consistent physicality and aggressiveness when fighting off would-be tacklers, does not get rattled under pressure, and never gives up on a play.
Elite play strength for the position, making him extremely dangerous as a ball carrier in the redzone. Good mental processing, keying the safety in single high looks and working away from him, and shows he understands how to work the middle of the field against Cover 2. Solid footwork, looking to reset feet before throwing after he leaves the pocket. Good release, squaring his shoulders and can throw from a variety of arm angles.
Very good arm strength, capable of fitting the ball in tight windows with good velocity and can put stress on the defense vertically. Very good short throw accuracy both from the pocket and on the move, thriving in the redzone on designed roll outs with very good ball placement on out-breaking routes. Very good medium and deep throw accuracy, showing he can hit WRS in stride, and knows when to throw back shoulder and keep it high and away vs Man Coverage.
Needs to work on lower body mechanics and footwork, becoming too bouncy in the pocket at times, and will get flat-footed and try to throw with all arm. Needs to do a better job with sight adjustment, getting the ball out to his quick reads when facing pressure. Does not always trust his eyes vs Zone coverage missing opportunities to hit open WRS as they cross the field. Will leave a clean pocket too early, cutting off half the field unnecessarily. Tends to scramble with a loose one hand grip on the ball which will lead to turnovers.
Lyons is a very good prospect as a true dual-threat quarterback with tremendous upside but will need work on processing and learn how to play more on schedule. He should be a Power 4 contributor by his second year.
