After entering the transfer portal yesterday, former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck committed to Miami this morning. While it isn’t surprising that Beck will be receiving a substantial amount of NIL money next season, the amount being reported is an eye-opener.

The Fox affiliate in Miami reports that UM's contract with Carson Beck is a one year, $4 M deal. As perspective, former second round pick Will Levis made $950,000 base as Tennessee Titans starting QB this season.

It is unknown how much Beck received at Georgia this season, but it is unlikely to have been as much as $4M. This an amount that would lead most players to transfer. It also further explains why Beck decided to transfer and not follow his initial plan of entering the NFL Draft.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck (15) leaves the field after a NCAA college football game against Massachusetts in Athens, Ga., on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024. Georgia won 59-21.

This also makes an interesting comparison to the rumored $6M that Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has been offered to enter the transfer portal. Interestingly, Beck’s and Ewers’ stats were quite similar this season, with Beck passing for 3,485 yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while Ewers has passed for 3,189 yards, 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. With Ewers supposedly being offered more money, how seriously is his temptation to follow Beck’s lead and return for one more collegiate season?

This is just another example of the odd state of college sports. Only a few years ago it would have been absurd to think that a college player could earn more than an NFL quarterback, yet now it is a reality.
