Plenty of fans dream of the memorable days when their legendary coach patrolled the sidelines. For Virginia Tech, their fans had two, as Frank Beamer led the program to new heights, while defensive coordinator Bud Foster established a dominant unit. Now one of them is returning.

While it isn’t exactly what the fans wanted, getting Foster back in any capacity is still an upgrade for the program. Since his retirement at the conclusion of the 2019 season, he has been working as an advisor for the Athletic Director. Now, he will be advising Coach Pry during Friday’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl against Minnesota and beyond.

Whoever the next defensive coordinator is will have the opportunity to lean on Foster for knowledge and insight. It is to be seen if he will fully embrace this though. Some coaches would cherish the opportunity, while others may see it as an intrusion.

But for now, this is a good decision for the Hokies. Coach Pry will enter the 2025 season on the hotseat, so it is smart of him to try and surround himself with as much experience as possible. And Foster brings that, success and his legendary persona.
