With DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick recently becoming head coaches for the first time, both are looking to grab some early headlines. Jackson accomplished that on New Year’s Eve when he signed a Big Ten transfer, who happens to be the son of an NFL great.

Antonio Gates Jr., who entered the transfer portal on December 7th, played for two seasons at Michigan State after a redshirting. During that time, he grabbed nine receptions for 131 yards and one touchdown. On Tuesday night he announced his new home via Instagram:

Gates

Gates Jr. was a highly regarded wide receiver coming out of high school, who chose Michigan State over offers from Arkansas, Illinois, Florida, Ole Miss, Nebraska, West Virginia, Penn State, Pittsburgh and others. While he never reached his potential with the Spartans, the chance to be coached by Coach Jackson, who totaled more than 11,000 receiving yards during his NFL career, was too good to pass up.

Being the son of Antonio Gates, a legendary tight end who also finished his career with more than 11,000 receiving yards, has given Gates Jr. the opportunity to be around elite football his entire life. Now that will continue in Newark, Delaware under the guidance of Coach Jackson.

Gates will receive coaching from an elite receiver while Coach Jackson is getting positive press. It is a win for both sides.
