College football fans know all about Washington State quarterback John Mateer. Lately, that is mostly because of the rumors of his potential transfer. However, at this point he has yet to enter the portal. Yesterday, his head coach Jake Dickert gave an update on his situation.

Both Mateer and Coach Dickert are in a difficult situation. Mateer is deciding on his future, while Coach Dickert has the task of preparing his team for the upcoming Holiday Bowl against Syracuse. And for now, Mateer is also preparing with the game:

Went to Coug media availability today. Dickert confirmed Mateer continues to practice, feels good about what they have offered, and that Mateer will get some family time before a decision.

Mateer is worth the hype. This season he has passed for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns, while rushing for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns. Along the way he only threw seven interceptions and completed 65% of his attempts.

Word of his potential transfer only intensified when his offensive coordinator at Washington State, Ben Arbuckle, recently took the same job at Oklahoma. And it is well known that the Sooners are desperate to add a top-level quarterback in the portal.

Oct 19, 2024; Pullman, Washington, USA; Washington State Cougars quarterback John Mateer (10) throws a pass against the Hawaii Warriors in the first half at Gesa Field at Martin Stadium.

This has made Oklahoma a hot topic regarding Mateer, however, if he were to enter the portal, plenty of other schools would also be involved. And this makes his upcoming decision even more interesting.

As the college football waits to see what happens, Mateer continues to prepare for the Holiday Bowl with his teammates and friends. It is a likely distraction to the chaos swirling around him.

Who would have thought that so many portal eyes would be focused on Pullman, Washington?
