Shedeur Sanders is on a mission this year, determined to turn things around after the Buffaloes’ rough season last year. He, alongside father and coach Deion Sanders have the Buffaloes at 9-3 apart of their best season since 2016.

In a previous article, I broke down key questions about each draft-eligible quarterback prospect. So far, Sanders has answered those questions with his performance and leadership on the field.

Sep 28, 2024; Orlando, Florida, USA; Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders (2) rolls out to pass against the UCF Knights during the first quarter at FBC Mortgage Stadium.

QB snapshot:

Height/weight: 6-2, 215 lbs

Style: Pro-style

When I think about the ultimate quarterback competitor, it’s difficult not to mention Sanders. His fire inspires his teammates, and they truly follow his lead, despite previous questions about his character. He’s a gifted, natural passer—not just someone who throws the ball for the sake of it. What I mean is that all of his throws are calculated and precise. There’s no guesswork because he’s done the legwork. With a solid combination of arm talent and football IQ, Sanders remains unfazed by pressure, consistently creating scoring opportunities for his team.

The Best Way to End the Scheduling Debate

Sanders recently made history with the Buffaloes, breaking a 28-year-old record held by Koy Detmer for passing yards in a single season. He also earned the prestigious Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award prior to the game against Oklahoma State, where he threw for five touchdowns. These achievements highlight his exceptional talent and ability to deliver results both on and off the field.

It’s important to reflect on his humble beginnings. Sanders could have gone nearly anywhere in the country, with 26 offers, but chose to commit to Jackson State University, a decision that contributed to the elevation of HBCU football. Fast forward to today, and he continues to excel at a high level.

Shedeur Sanders’ Strengths:

Arm Talent: Sanders possesses notable arm strength, with the ability to deliver the ball accurately at all three levels of the field. His deep ball is consistently beautiful and precise.

Football IQ: He is one of the few quarterbacks who can effectively understand and dissect a defense. Sanders excels at recognizing spacing and adjustments, consistently putting his receivers in positions to maximize their effectiveness.

Leadership: A vocal leader both on and off the field, Sanders holds his teammates to the same high standards he sets for himself. His sense of accountability stands out. In clutch moments, his teammates trust and rely on his direction and voice.

2024 Season stats:

  • Passing Yards: 3,926
  • Passing Touchdowns: 35
  • Interceptions: 8
  • Rushing Touchdowns: 4
  • Completion Percentage: 74.2%

These numbers reflect Sanders’ consistency and passing ability, showcasing his accuracy and knack for producing when called upon.

Scouting Report:

Comparison: In his college tape, Sanders shows elements of Jared Goff’s precision, blended with Joe Burrow’s poise and maybe even some of Tom Brady’s leadership, who he’s trained with before.

Key Attribute: Accuracy. Sanders is lethal when his feet are properly set. When given time, he rarely misses throws.

Developmental Focus: Sanders needs to work on getting the ball out quicker and trusting his legs more. Holding onto the ball too long has led to crucial sacks throughout his career. However, when he moves around in the pocket, it often results in positive plays.

Final remarks/projection:

I’m excited to watch Sanders’ growth over the years. His talent is undeniable, and I project him to be the first quarterback taken in the draft. Sanders embodies the classic style of play that the quarterback position was once known for and bringing it back to the forefront. It’s refreshing to see this approach in today’s game. With several teams in need of a quarterback, I can see Sanders excelling in the Las Vegas Raiders offense—unless, of course, the New York Giants draft him first.
