By Mike Huesmann
In a move truly out of left field, Kennesaw State has fired Brian Bohannon. Bohannon was 72-38 over his time with the Owls, and 1-8 this year, their first year in the FCS. I feel like this move was predetermined because no one expected many wins from Kennesaw this year and their upset over Liberty will likely be the biggest FBS upset of the season. But I don’t make the decisions, I just tell you who might be a replacement. This one could go a few ways. Personally, I’d hire a veteran with experience as a head coach but there are a variety of guys I could see, too many to list all of them here.
This morning I was informed directly from AD Overton that he was making a change in leadership. Contrary to what’s been reported, I want to be clear that I did not step down from my position as head football coach at Kennesaw State University.
Since we started the football…

Drew Cronic
Navy, Offensive Coordinator
Cronic’s offense at Navy is lighting up the scoreboards this year. They sit at 7-2 and are running the ball with efficiency and success. He was a successful FCS head coach at Mercer, leading them to a 9-4 season in 2023 before jumping to Navy. There is a Kennesaw-Navy connection with Brian Newberry having been the Kennesaw DC prior to his move to Annapolis and his scheme won’t be too different from Bohannon’s option attack.
It's been fun to watch Drew Cronic reinvent the Navy Offense with a mixture of Wing-T, Flexbone and Spread Concepts

Jerry Mack
Jacksonville Jaguars, RB Coach
As North Carolina Central’s head coach, Mack won three conference titles in four years at the FCS level. He is a known recruiter and has coached many stellar offensive players at Memphis, South Alabama, Rice, and Tennessee before bolting for the NFL this year. He’s taken an odd career path from being a very young and successful FCS head coach to an FBS and NFL assistant, but his time as an FBS head coach will come. He could be a candidate for other jobs.
#Jaguars RB group will be an interesting group to watch this preseason. I think Jackson is a guy to watch.

Kade Bell
Pittsburgh Panthers, Offensive Coordinator
If a young, energetic, and proficient X’s and O’s coach is what the Owls want, then Bell could be the guy. He has Georgia connections having been at D-II power Valdosta as offensive coordinator early in his career. Still only 31 years old, he has seen a meteoric rise going from D-II to P4 OC in only four years. If he’s ambitious and confident enough, this could be an exciting option.
ok this was sick by kade bell – one game in and already such an upgrade over cignetti pic.twitter.com/1iZNWuWbcz

Blake Anderson
Utah State and Arkansas State, Former Head Coach
Anderson is no stranger to the G5 and has had plenty of success there. He first became a head coach at Arkansas State and was a successful head coach before moving to Utah State in the aftermath of personal tragedy. Anderson was fired this past offseason for improperly handling Title IX issues. If that issue is resolved he could be in the mix here. We are seeing a trend of G5 schools hiring experienced veterans in recent years.

Brennan Marion
UNLV, Offensive Coordinator
Marion has shown us that he will move up the ladder in search of that better job, so he’d likely accept the job if offered. His go-go offense has not been slowed down in any of his stops. He has been successful on offense every year since 2018, with stops at William & Mary, Hawaii, Pittsburgh, Texas, and now UNLV. He is as innovative as they come and his team’s ability to run the ball is almost a guarantee. He might be the jolt in the arm that Kennesaw needs.
