As we head into Week 1 of the college football season, the slate features a number of FBS vs. FCS matchups and, on the surface, may seem less competitive than usual. However, the excitement of seeing certain players step onto the field — whether for the first time in their collegiate careers, in a new uniform, or returning for another season — adds an extra layer of excitement. These games offer a glimpse into what the year might hold for these individuals and how they could impact their teams’ success.
Here are three players I’m particularly excited to watch in Week 1:
1. Dylan Raiola, QB, Nebraska
Dylan Raiola’s debut as Nebraska’s starting quarterback is one of the most anticipated storylines of the season. As only the second true freshman in Nebraska history to start a game, Raiola carries high expectations from fans, head coach Matt Rhule, and himself.
Nebraska’s offense struggled in 2023, finishing 117th in total offense. Raiola’s first challenge will be against UTEP, a matchup that should provide a manageable test. The key question is: Can he move the chains? Establishing a strong run game will be crucial to opening up the offense, and I’m eager to see how Raiola commands the huddle, reads defenses, and pushes the ball down the field.
In Week 1, I’m not necessarily looking for a flawless stat line but rather how well Raiola settles into his role. Is he making quick, accurate decisions? Is he reading his progressions correctly? Coach Rhule has made it clear that Raiola won’t be eased into the action, stating, “We’re not going to ease into it. We’re going to play.” Watching how Raiola handles this pressure in his first game at home will be key, especially with a tough matchup against Colorado on the horizon.

2. Grayson McCall, QB, NC State
Grayson McCall’s transfer to NC State from Coastal Carolina is one of the most intriguing moves of the offseason. As a three-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, McCall has already proven himself as a top-tier college quarterback. Now, with a more talented group of playmakers around him, it’s exciting to consider what he might accomplish in the ACC.
McCall has quickly become a leader in his new team, earning the respect of his teammates and being named captain. With a solid and experienced offensive line to protect him and weapons like Kevin Concepcion, Jordan Waters, and Noah Rogers, McCall is well-positioned to shine.
In Week 1, I’m eager to see how McCall adapts to the ACC’s increased competition and how he leverages his new talent. If he can build on his success at Coastal and integrate well with his new teammates, McCall and the Wolfpack could make a serious run in the ACC this season.

3. Ollie Gordon II, RB, Oklahoma State
Ollie Gordon, the 2023 Doak Walker Award Winner and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, return to Stillwater with high hopes for a Heisman campaign and potentially historic season. Gordon, a junior running back, is expected to be a cornerstone of the Cowboys’ offense as they pursue a Big 12 title.
In Week 1, Gordon will face South Dakota State, the 2023 FCS champion. While the matchup may seem favorable, it’s a great opportunity to gauge how Gordon’s Heisman hopes are shaping up. I’m particularly excited to see if he can reach 2,000 rushing yards this season, a feat that would cement his status among college football’s elite.
Last year, Mike Gundy was cautious with Gordon’s early-season workload, but I expect a different approach this year. Gordon should benefit from one of the most talented and deepest offensive lines in the country, which boasts a combined 200 starts. With this line, Gordon should have ample opportunities to make a statement in the opening game and kick off his 2024 Heisman campaign with a strong performance.
