Mind of Mike: Michigan, Ohio State Fans Are Equally Annoying

Michigan and Ohio State fans have both proven that they can be annoying at the same time

The best thing about college football is also the most annoying thing. And that’s blinding, unwavering loyalty to your program and fierce and intense non-negotiable hatred for your rivals.

And this is why Michigan and Ohio State fans are so freaking annoying.

To Michigan fans — someone cheated. Someone did something wrong. Even if you think it’s Connor Stalions as a lone wolf, which is ridiculous to think for anyone with a formed brain, it’s still a staffer. Absolute denial of any wrongdoing is annoying and dumb. And it makes you sound dumb. And yet I see it over and over again.

Here’s how you should handle it as a Michigan fan.

“I don’t know what happened kinda like the rest of the world. Based on all the smoke there’s probably a fire someplace but I’m sure it wasn’t the reason we won a national title. We had the best team in the country and didn’t lose a game even after the scandal was announced. Penn State, Ohio State, Iowa, Alabama and Washington all had a chance to prove we weren’t the best — and we beat them all”

Nov 26, 2022; Columbus, Ohio, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day yells during the first half of the NCAA football game against the Michigan Wolverines at Ohio Stadium.

Instead it’s “we didn’t cone knew, this is a witch hunt against Harbaugh and so on”. It’s annoying and dumb.

The Best Way to End the Scheduling Debate

To Ohio State fans — You lost. You lost three years in a row. Michigan owned you during that stretch and whatever cheating that occurred wasn’t the reason. Michigan won a national title and it’s doubtful it will be vacated or even have an asterisk next to it like you want. Calling them no talent cheaters is stupid. Saying the reason they beat you and everyone else last season was Connor Stalions and advanced scouting is ignorant.

Here’s how you should handle it as an Ohio State fan.

Connor Stalions, left, stands next to Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh during the team's game against Rutgers, Sept. 23, 2023, at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

“I can’t stand Michigan and can’t stand Harbaugh. The guy was suspended for recruiting violations and for the Stalions stuff. He’s the only FBS head coach in history to be suspended twice in the same season for two different infractions. He’s a win-at-all-costs coach who abandoned his program after he won it all so he didn’t have to face scrutiny. But Michigan was a great team last season, they beat us and many other top teams. We had a chance to bring it all crashing down at the end of the season and once again we lost. I can’t stand it. But to think it was all about cheating is just wrong. We could have stopped all of it and we didn’t.”

All of this is fine and dandy right? It would be a dream come true. And it won’t ever happen I know. Sure, there are reasonable fans on both sides but the majority of them are tunnel vision fanatics like most fan bases. As a neutral observer it’s hard to take but in the midst of the rivalry it’s what makes everything better. I get it. I just think it’s dumb at the same time.
