Central Michigan landed their future as 3-Star QB Lawrence Wells announced his commitment Thursday. The 6-3, 180 pound QB from Brighton, MI, chose the Chippewas over schools like Pittsburgh, Eastern Michigan, and Ball State. Following his commitment, Wells was generous enough to sit down with Cory Lemer to discuss his recruitment, commitment to Central Michigan, and goals for his senior season.

As a kid growing up in Ann Arbor, Wells’ favorite school was the Michigan Wolverines with Central Michigan as his second favorite school. He started playing football at five, playing in a tackle football AFY league, touted as one of the toughest in the country. Playing in this league helped Wells become a top QB in the state. He stated growing up in Michigan with the inconsistent weather helped him prepare for handling the ball and any conditions he might face as a QB in college. Below is a scouting report on the touted QB:

Standing at 6-3, 180 pounds, Wells is a true dual-threat QB. His acceleration is shown throughout the film, as when the pocket collapses, he can escape and break free for massive gains. His arm strength is solid as he can launch the ball, but does not seem to chuck it down the field as often. When outside the pocket, Wells seems to be the best version he can be, as he can run for gains or force the defense into tricky situations, giving him the ability to find an open receiver. Alongside that, he is comfortable standing tall in the pocket to find open receivers and can deliver a solid ball while taking hits. His footwork could use some tweaking, as he is very antsy in the pocket. With the ability to hit most levels across the field, his accuracy could improve as he works towards the next level. Wells is a solid G5-low P5 QB in need of some fine tweaking and overall improvement in some areas of his game as he works toward the next level.

After receiving an offer on June 8th, Wells was quick to announce his commitment to the Chippewas just five days later. With a final four of Ball State, Pittsburgh, Eastern Michigan, and Central Michigan it became clear he would stay home and build a connection with Head Coach Jim McElwain and QB Coach Jake Kostner.

“All the coaches love me and treat me like I am already a player.”

Wells stated the coaches in Mount Pleasant treat him as part of the Central Michigan family and appreciate the love his hometown school gives him.

“He seems excited to work with me.”

When talking about QB Coach Kostner, Wells believes he is ready to work with the talented QB and is excited to arrive on campus and learn from the Coach.

Wells has big goals for his senior season, as he wants to amount for over 5,000 yards and 35 touchdowns. He believes if his team has a big season, he can recruit his teammates Brayden Platt and Ryan Jersduik to Central Michigan. With the goal of a big senior season, he hopes to recreate the big three in Mount Pleasant. With his recruitment shut down, Wells is happy with the process and is excited for his senior season and to get on campus with the Chippewas.
