In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. WR Jeremiah Smith will be better than WR Emeka Egbuka at Ohio State.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I love Smith and think he can be better than Marvin Harrison Jr. was which is going out on a massive limb, but let’s not forget Egbuka and his talent. For every highlight catch Smith makes, Egbuka is more steady and polished as a route runner right now and should have a 1,000-yard season. Ohio State is in amazing shape at WR, as usual, and Egbuka will be a top 10 pick, followed by Smith as a top five in a few years.

Sep 17, 2022; Columbus, Ohio, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Emeka Egbuka (2) scores a touchdown around Toledo Rockets cornerback Chris McDonald (13) during the first half of the NCAA Division I football game at Ohio Stadium.

2. Quinn Ewers could lose his job this season.

Farrell’s take: FACT

The key word here is “could”, so relax. I wasn’t as high on Arch Manning as others coming out of high school, and I still think he’s solid but not spectacular, but let’s be real — if Ewers struggles or gets injured and has to miss a game or so, he might lose his job for good. It’s interesting as Ewers could have a season where he becomes the No. 1 overall pick or could have a season where he’s looking for a new home.

Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers (3) throws a pass during the game against Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, Sep. 9, 2023 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

3. WR Dorian Singer has a bounce-back season at Utah.

Farrell’s take: FACT

I loved him at Arizona, but he struggled with the depth at USC, falling from a 1,000-yard receiver as a Wildcat to an afterthought in LA. But with Cam Rising back and with his experience, I think Singer becomes a go-to target for him and could push for 1,000 again. The strong running game will open up the passing game for a kid like Singer, who can win one-on-one battles.

Sep 30, 2023; Boulder, Colorado, USA; USC Trojans wide receiver Dorian Singer (15) attempts to pull in a pass during the game against the Colorado Buffaloes at Folsom Field.
