Mike Farrell on where the Chiefs and Cowboys go Round 1, and if Johnny Newton will be the first DT drafted

Illinois DL Johnny Newton

In today’s Fact or Fiction — NFL Draft edition — I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Chiefs go WR at No. 32.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Rashee Rice is in trouble and the depth at the position isn’t good so look for a guy like AD Mitchell from Texas to be a target if he’s available. His teammate, Xavier Worthy, could be the pick as well as replacing the speed of Tyreek Hill is needed. Mecole Hardman is Worthy like but despite his Super Bowl winner he’s had call control issues.

Texas Longhorns wide receiver Adonai Mitchell catches a touchdown pass in the second quarter against BYU Cougars safety Raider Damuni at Royal-Memorial Stadium on Saturday October 28, 2023.

2. The Cowboys go OT.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Cowboys fans may want a flashy pick like a WR but the need is at tackle and this is a deep draft where an elite one like JC Latham or Amarius Mims could land at No. 24. It’s not sexy but it’s needed.

Sep 4, 2021; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide offensive lineman JC Latham (65) blocks against the Miami Hurricanes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

3. Johnny Newton could be the top DT taken.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Byron Murphy II from Texas is the No. 1 DT on most lists but keep an eye on the Illinois gap shooter. He’s athletic and a lot of teams are downplaying him in hopes he slides to them. But don’t be shocked if a team like Jacksonville shocks some people and takes him over Murphy. It’s unlikely, but it COULD happen.

Oct 21, 2023; Champaign, Illinois, USA; Illinois Fighting Illini defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton (4) tackles Wisconsin Badgers running back Braelon Allen (0) during the first half at Memorial Stadium.
