Mike Farrell on whether Oregon is the best team in the portal in their new conference, if Iowa should be embarrassed…

In today’s Fact or Fiction — transfer portal edition — I look at three big recent topics from the transfer portal and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Oregon uses the portal the best in the Big Ten.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I’d say yes to this in a second as the Ducks have been a really solid portal program the last few years especially under Dan Lanning, but Ohio State got serious this year. Quinshon Judkins, Caleb Downs, and others form an elite group of high-end players that could push Ohio State over the top in the Big Ten if they can solve their QB issue.

Dec 30, 2023; Atlanta, GA, USA; Mississippi Rebels running back Quinshon Judkins (4) stiff arms Penn State Nittany Lions defensive end Jameial Lyons (19) in the second half at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

2. Iowa embarrassed themselves with OT Kadyn Proctor.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Think about it. Iowa tampered, admitted it, their NIL collective paid him some money and he’s headed back to Alabama. Iowa got played by Proctor and played badly and the only hope is that other teams can learn a lesson from their embarrassment. This was ugly for Kirk Ferentz and everyone involved.

Sep 2, 2023; Iowa City, Iowa, USA; Iowa Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz and running back Kamari Moulton (28) look on during a timeout during the second quarter against the Utah State Aggies Kinnick Stadium.

3. Julian Sayin wins the Ohio State QB job.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Kansas State transfer Will Howard has the experience, and in the end, I think that wins out even though Sayin is pushing for the job as expected. I had Sayin as my No. 1 QB in the 2024 class for a reason, and he will play and likely play a lot soon, but I think Ryan Day starts conservatively and brings him along slowly.

2024 five-star quarterback Julian Sayin from Carlsbad, CA (Carlsbad)
