I hate many things. People know this. So why not write about the things I hate? You’re welcome. Today’s hate is idiot fans who think Caleb Williams is a generational talent and will be the next Pat Mahomes.
It’s clear I was wrong about Mahomes. As I said at the time, the Chiefs made a dumb move by trading up for Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft. I was sure the Chiefs were trading up to land DeShaun Watson, who I felt was the best quarterback in that draft. I felt Mahomes free-lanced way too much. Bad take, huh?

But one thing Mahomes did have was a good attitude. He wasn’t a selfish player, and he was always a team-first kid from high school through college. Williams is not, at least in my opinion, and based on many discussions I’ve had with people and my own experiences. Is he talented? Very much so. It’s why I had him as a 5-star out of high school. But unlike Mahomes, Williams is not a team guy and is all about himself. And his talent won’t overcome that.
There have been rumors about Williams and his father, Carl, asking for this and that. Some are unlikely, and some could be true. I wouldn’t put it past them to make demands we’ve never seen from a QB. That’s the way it’s been since he was in high school. And that’s not a horrible thing. Why shouldn’t they try to monetize his brand? Have at it. We are in a new world, and we may look back on Williams as the first guy who brought revenue sharing to the QB position. But you have to be a certain kind of kid to pull this off.

What kind of kid? Likable and self-effacing. You can be selfish but can’t show it, and you have to be one of the guys. That’s what makes Mahomes different. Williams has talent similar to Mahomes. His off-platform work, ability to extend the play, and downfield vision are amazing. Williams can do it all on the field. But generational talents need to be team guys as well. That’s why I compare him to Kyler Murray, another “me first” guy who went No. 1. People can blame Arizona and Kliff Kingsbury all they want, but we still have had body language discussions about Murray for years and have heard him constantly throw others under the bus. Williams is more direct with his arrogance, as these examples show…

I will say this about Riley. There’s no way on any planet I’d let my star player have F**K Utah or F**K anyone on his damn fingernails before a game if I was the head coach. He’d never leave the locker room. pic.twitter.com/DeMTYqNIRo

The arrogance is becoming more noticeable?

Arrogant QBs have had success. In fact, you have to be arrogant to be great at the position. But it’s a fine line, and I don’t think Williams will be able to navigate it.
Personally, if I’m picking in the top 10 and need a quarterback, I’m passing on Williams. Sounds risky, I know, and I’d have been fired very quickly had I been the guy who traded up for Watson over Mahomes. But I’ll double down anyhow. Williams will not be a successful NFL quarterback, and it will be his attitude that kills him.
