What does the recruiting landscape comprise of in the new-look Big 12?

The new look Big 12 has the recruiting crown for the taking after the departures of Oklahoma and Texas. The 2024 cycle invited newcomers Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona State after their exit from the Pac-12. While this didn’t necessarily “replace” the blue-bloods of the conference, it certainly made things more interesting on the recruiting trail.

16) Colorado

7 Signees

One 5-Star, Three 4-Stars, Two 3-Stars

Is coach Deion Sanders on his way out? Signing Jordan Seaton (#1 OT) is certainly the highlight, but signing seven high school players doesn’t scream long-term commitment and isn’t sustainable.

15) Arizona

14 Signees

Two 4-Stars, Ten 3-Stars

After the departure of coach Jedd Fisch to Washington, the Wildcats and new head coach Brent Brennan certainly had their work cut out for them. Retaining Jordan Washington (#24 RB) was the biggest win of the cycle after Demond Williams (#12 QB) followed coach Fisch to Washington.

14) Baylor

14 Signees

One 4-Star, Thirteen 3-Stars

A 3-9 season definitely makes it tough on the trail, but coach Dave Aranda put together a pretty well-rounded class. The most notable signing is Alex Foster (#54 DL) as the Bears look to stack depth on the defensive line.

Baylor’s new DL commit Alex Foster is an athlete 😮 6-5, 275 @Alex_Foster2 pic.twitter.com/G49idLQTL0

13) Houston

17 Signees

Two 4-Stars, Fourteen 3-Stars

Hiring coach Willie Fritz to replace Dana Holgorsen is a step that will certainly keep up the standard of recruiting, of not strengthen it for the Cougars. Landing J’Marion Burnette (#28 RB) late in the cycle over a few SEC teams was the biggest win in Houston’s 2024 class, a nice way for Fritz to start his campaign.

⭐️Scout Outlook: J’Marion is a elusive RB with a blend of power & speed! He displays excellent athleticism and breakaway ability.

12) Oklahoma State

17 Signees

Seventeen 3-Stars

Even with a fairly well-rounded class, the star power in the 2024 class for coach Mike Gundy and the Cowboys is underwhelming fresh off a conference championship game appearance. Landing a top-40 quarterback in Maealiuaki Smith (#35 QB) is noteworthy as the Cowboys look to keep producing on the field results in the new-look Big 12.

11) Kansas State

15 Signees

Two 4-Stars, Thirteen 3-Stars

In a strong class for the Wildcats, coach Chris Klieman did well in landing four of the top-10 players in the state of Kansas. The most notable player in that group from Kansas is Gus Hawkins (#19 IOL), the number one player in the state. On the field results will be important to build momentum heading into the 2025 cycle.

10) Utah

15 Signees

Two 4-Stars, Twelve 3-Stars

Head coach Kyle Whittingham has done nothing but exceed expectations on the field, and it looks like that’s carried over to recruiting. Landing in-state teammates Isaac Wilson (#18 QB), and Isaiah Garcia (#23 OT) is a slam dunk and the cornerstone of a great class for the Utes.

9) Iowa State

22 Signees

Twenty-two 3-Stars

The Cyclones landed quality players at every position in the 2024 cycle, a very well-rounded class for coach Matt Campbell. An underrated player to keep an eye on is Dylan Lee (#81 RB), a player that shows the burst to make him dangerous any time he touches the ball.

8) Cincinnati

21 Signees

One 4-Star, Twenty 3-Stars

The Bearcats took a massive step up in recruiting after being the lowest-ranked team in the 2023 cycle. Coach Scott Satterfield will look to use a strong 2024 class that includes presumed future QB1 Samaj Jones (#32 QB) to keep building momentum in recruiting and on the field.

Samaj Jones (@SamajJones2) is one of the country’s best dual-threat QBs because of his ability to hit NFL-level max speed.

His max speed of 19.9 mph on this TD would have been the 3rd fastest among NFL QBs in ‘22 behind Lamar Jackson (20.5), and Tyler Huntley (20.0). #ReelSpeed pic.twitter.com/5MUPrEaLkO

— Reel Analytics (@RAanalytics) June 15, 2023

7) Arizona State

19 Signees

One 4-Star, Eighteen 3-Stars

Coming off a 3-9 campaign, coach Kenny Dillingham was able to construct a quality recruiting class despite the on the field results. A late-cycle win in Jason Brown (#20 RB) is a notable win gives the Sun Devils’ 2024 class a dynamic athlete that could push for early playing time.

Great comeback win last night! After going scoreless in the first half we score 21 unanswered points for a great team win! Big season ahead @SBLiveWA @adamgorney @BrandonHuffman @TFordFSP @RealMG96 @ChadSimmons_ @ODeaAthletics pic.twitter.com/MpaODEhHZw

6) West Virginia

22 Signees

One 4-Star, Twenty-one 3-Stars

The Mountaineers and coach Neal Brown shattered the expectations of many in 2023, and took advantage of that momentum with a strong 2024 recruiting class. A player that isn’t receiving enough attention in the class is Diore Hubbard (#76 RB), who was an all-state high school player from Ohio.

5) BYU

26 Signees

Two 4-Stars, Twenty-four 3-Stars

The Cougars welcome a large class to Provo as head coach Kalani Sitake looks to lay the foundation for the future in the Big 12. A key signing is Ryner Swanson (#13 TE), a talented athlete from the state of California that chose BYU over the likes of Texas. Any time you get a recruiting win over a blue blood, it’s something to write home about.

4) Kansas

17 Signees

Three 4-Stars, Fourteen 3-Stars

The buzz of many coaching search conversations across the country, coach Lance Leipold landed what could be argued is one of the most talented recruiting classes the Jayhawks have seen. Landing a top-10 defensive end in Deshawn Warner (#10 EDGE) is the highlight of the class, a high-end player at an impact position.

deshawn warner, remember the name.pic.twitter.com/O8Tv21TnYt

3) TCU

21 Signees

Five 4-Stars, Fifteen 3-Stars

Just the second recruiting cycle after a national title game appearance, coach Sonny Dykes and the Frogs are still benefitting in recruiting, landing another solid class. The most notable signing is in-state quarterback Hauss Hejny (#19 QB), a dual threat quarterback who looks to be the future QB1 coach Dykes is looking for.

Last Friday 4 ⭐️ TCU commit ‘24 QB Hauss Hejny lead Aledo to a dominant victory over The Colony.

2) UCF

18 Signees

Seven 4-Stars, Eleven 3-Stars

The Knights class is one that you don’t have to look far to find the highlights. Coach Gus Malzahn made a point to recruit regionally, with ten players in the class from Florida and six from Georgia. An underrated player is a physical ball-carrier in Stacy Gage (#37 RB), which just cites the amount of talent put together by UCF in the 2024 cycle.

1) Texas Tech

21 Signees

One 5-Star, Five 4-Stars, Fifteen 3-Stars

I was trying to find a superlative to describe the class put together by coach Joey McGuire, and as the title of the article reads, I keep landing on “remarkable”. Landing Micah Hudson (#4 WR) aside, the Red Raiders landed twenty players from the state of Texas, making a point to build a talented class regionally.
