The Most Embarrassing Title Droughts Left

Miami should be ashamed that they haven’t sniffed a national title in over two decades

Michigan won it all for the first time since they shared a title in 1997, and UGA won back-to-back in 2021 and 2022 to stop the chants of 1980 forever. So, who’s left as we look at the most embarrassing programs with no excuse to go this long without a title?

1. Miami

— With such an amazing home recruiting territory and so much history, it’s amazing Miami hasn’t won it all since 2001. And they joined the ACC, which has been a cakewalk for years.

Sep 9, 2023; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal celebrates after a touchdown against the Texas A&M Aggies during the fourth quarter at Hard Rock Stadium.

2. Texas

— This is a joke. How has a program with so many financial resources and an amazing and fertile recruiting territory not won it all since Vince Young was at QB? 2005 is forever ago and this is not only unacceptable but also embarrassing, and, despite the progress shown last season, things get harder in the SEC.

Sep. 9, 2023; Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian celebrates the 34-24 win over Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, Sep. 9, 2023 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

3. Southern Cal

— NIL was supposed to make LA hot again in football, right? And Lincoln Riley was a superstar hire who was gonna end the natty drought, yes? Neither has happened, and they are regressing instead. Pete Carroll is now retired (for now) from coaching that’s how long ago 2004 was.

Oct 28, 2023; Berkeley, California, USA; USC Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley reacts after a penalty during the third quarter against the California Golden Bears at California Memorial Stadium.

4. Florida

— Urban Meyer led them to the promised land in 2006 and 2008, and since then, it’s been either slightly above average or a disaster. And we are currently in disaster mode with zero hope in sight for another title. As the lone Florida school in the SEC, they should be recruiting and building rosters like Meyer did, and here we are staring at yet another losing season in 2024. It’s embarrassing.

Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier looks on during the first half against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Steve Spurrier Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, FL on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

5. Ohio State

— I said only one team from a cold-weather state could win it all in this day and age, and that’s Ohio State, but here we are with Michigan the reigning champs. Notre Dame’s drought comes to mind here but Ohio State doesn’t have the academic issue or the location issue that the Irish have. There is no excuse here to be without a title since 2014. Maybe Urban is the curse for the Gators and Buckeyes?

Dec 29, 2023; Arlington, Texas, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day and running back TreVeyon Henderson (32) sing Carmen Ohio following their 14-3 loss to the Missouri Tigers in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic at AT&T Stadium.
