Portal Fact or Fiction: Cam Ward the Savior, Isaiah Bond to Texas, Taulia’s Next Home

Mike Farrell breaks down if Miami’s new quarterback will put the Hurricanes over the top, if Isaiah Bond should have stayed at Alabama with Kalen DeBoer…

In today’s Fact or Fiction — transfer portal edition — I look at three big recent topics from the transfer portal and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Cam Ward is the savior for Miami.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Let’s slow the roll a bit. I know Miami fans are excited that Ward decided to forgo the NFL Draft and play for the Hurricanes but portal QBs in year one are iffy. The better ones, like Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., and Bo Nix spent a year or so in a system before flourishing so assuming Ward can come right in and fix the QB and offensive woes is a reach. He’s a very good QB and will be better than anyone Mario Cristobal has had in Coral Gables, but turns the ball over a bit and I think Miami needs a lot more than just average QB play. He’d need to be special.

Nov 25, 2023; Seattle, Washington, USA; Washington State Cougars quarterback Cameron Ward (1) passes against the Washington Huskies during the second quarter at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium.

2. Texas was the best fit for Isaiah Bond.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Quinn Ewers is back, Texas loses some at wide receiver and Bond began to emerge as the go-to guy at Alabama so the timing makes sense. I’m not sure what the “business decision” is and all that but with a new coaching staff, Bond decided to head to the team that beat Alabama and it makes some sense. Kalen DeBoer is a great offensive mind and produced some amazing WRs at Washington but the unknown is still there while Texas is a sure thing.

Alabama WR Isaiah Bond makes the game-winning catch in the end zone on 4th down and 31 to beat Auburn 27-24 in the 2023 Iron Bowl.

3. Taulia Tagovailoa would be a nice fit at Michigan.

Farrell’s take: FACT

If he gets another year of eligibility, Tagovailoa would be a nice fit. Maryland had a pretty balanced offense and the things he’d be asked to do in Ann Arbor aren’t out of his skill set. And with JJ McCarthy gone, there is a big need at QB. I’m not saying there is interest on either side but an experienced QB from the Big Ten wouldn’t be a bad fit.

Nov 25, 2023; Piscataway, New Jersey, USA; Maryland Terrapins quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa (3) scores a rushing touchdown during the first half against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at SHI Stadium.
