In today’s Fact or Fiction — transfer portal edition — I look at three big recent topics from the transfer portal and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.
1. Maalik Murphy will be heavily recruited in the portal.
Farrell’s take: FACT
I’m not sure why, but he will be. Murphy is a big kid with a good arm, and out of high school, he was heavily recruited, but his time at Texas has been pedestrian. I fell for it with Hudson Card last year, and he was a disaster at Purdue. Murphy, by all accounts, is a great kid, but he won’t be a big deal for someone at his new school either. But watch how many big programs show interest, you’ll be amazed.

2. Tyler Van Dyke is the answer for Wisconsin.
Farrell’s take: FICTION
Nope. VanDyke has regressed since the early hot start at Miami in his career, and he’s injury-prone as well. So, to think he can go into a pretty solid offensive scheme at Wisconsin and change his ways makes sense to some, but not to me. The portal is buyer beware for QBs as for every Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, and Michael Penix Jr., there are about 20 also ran QBs who won’t make a difference, kind of like Tanner Mordecai at Wisconsin. This won’t change much for the Badgers.

3. There will eventually be no penalty for multiple transfers.
Farrell’s take: FACT
Eventually. The courts just gave a 14-day window, which helps basketball mainly, but we are headed to a time where you will be able to transfer as many times as you want. Why? NIL and the lack of control over it. Until Congress gets involved, and that will be a long time, NIL is the mantra for players who want to sue the NCAA and their schools for anti-trust reasons. And the NCAA doesn’t want that smoke, so they will cave. It’s coming sooner than later.
