The transfer portal does not open until December 4th, but already, some high-profile names have been entered into the outgoing ledger. One of those names is former Miami Hurricanes QB Tyler Van Dyke.

As if Miami’s season has not been chaotic enough for the fans, head coach Mario Cristobal may have to scour the campus for anyone who has thrown a football in a live game before.

With Van Dyke’s departure, the Hurricanes have just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: Emory Williams (who was injured vs Florida State) and Jacuuri Brown, who has not thrown a pass in live game situations at all this season.

Van Dyke faced sky-high expectations after a stellar 2021 season in which he was named the ACC Rookie of the Year after passing for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just six INTs in a passing scheme coached by offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee (now the head coach at SMU).

In an injury-riddled 2022 season, Van Dyke’s numbers dropped considerably: 1,835 yards, 10 touchdowns and 5 INTs.

This season, Van Dyke passed for 2,703 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 INTs, his highest total as a Hurricane.

Against in-state rival Florida State, Van Dyke was just 2 of 7 for 29 yards. Cristobal escorted Van Dyke to his spot on the bench and inserted the freshman Williams into the game. Then Williams went down with an injured arm and Van Dyke was called back into service. The Canes lost to the Seminoles 27-20.

For his career, Van Dyke ranks among the following in school history-

  • 2nd in completion percentage (63.7%)
  • 4th in completions (581)
  • 4th in touchdown passes (54)
  • 6th in passing yards (7,469)

Van Dyke leaves the Hurricanes with 7,469 career passing yards on the books to go with those 54 touchdowns and 23 INTs.

There have been reports and rumors around the Gatorade cooler as to where Van Dyke might land on the other side of the portal. Those destinations include:

  • Notre Dame (Sam Hartman has exhausted his eligibility after this season).
  • UConn (under head coach Jim Mora Jr., and the fact that UConn’s campus is less than a half-hour from his hometown of Glastonbury, CT.).
  • N.C. State
  • Rutgers (again, closer to home)
  • Wisconsin (Tanner Mordecai has exhausted his eligibility after this season, and Van Dyke was heavily recruited by the Badgers out of high school)

Yes, Van Dyke has struggled and suffered through shoulder injuries during his career. But he still can be a quality signal-caller on the right team in the right system. Come Monday, we shall see which teams come calling for Van Dyke.
