Fact or Fiction: Day on the Hot Seat, Elko at A&M, LSU’s Future Prospects

Mike Farrell figures out whether Ryan Day is truly on the hot seat in Columbus, if the Aggies made the right hire…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Ryan Day is officially on a hot seat.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Sorry, but it’s true. No matter his overall record, patience is running thin in Columbus, with a 1-6 record against top-five teams and three straight losses to Michigan. If the Wolverines win the national title, the seat gets even hotter, and if he doesn’t go undefeated next season and beat Michigan, a mutual departure could happen. It sounds crazy with a 56-7 overall record, but Ryan Day is officially on notice.

2. Mike Elko is a great hire for Texas A&M.

Farrell’s take: FACT

I love this hire. That being said, I don’t know how successful he can be there, as no one has had true success with the Aggies for whatever reason, but he’s a heckuva coach. His defensive nature is a fit for the SEC, and he is smart in his offensive hires, so he’s a great candidate who did an amazing job at Duke. But for some reason, this program just can’t get it together from an administrative aspect despite so many resources.

3. LSU is a year away.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Nope. Jayden Daniels saved this team and its horrible defense, and despite recruiting advantages and the lure of the portal, there are too many holes to fix to be considered a playoff contender next season. As teams in the SEC improve (A&M should, Ole Miss, Missouri) and with Texas and Oklahoma coming in, LSU will be in the middle of the pack next season. You can’t fix a defense that bad in a year. Ask Lincoln Riley.

Nov 11, 2023; Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA; LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels (5) rushes against the Florida Gators during the second half at Tiger Stadium.
