Fact or Fiction: Caleb’s Tears, Saban’s Tampering, Walters’ Cold Shoulder

Mike Farrell breaks down whether the USC quarterback’s post-game reaction was a bad omen for his future…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Caleb Williams crying was a bad look.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Hey, maybe I’m a jerk. In fact, I know I’m a jerk. And players cry after big losses, and that’s okay. But to curl up in the arms of your mother in the stands and sob like a baby on national television just isn’t the look.

I know, I know. People will say I’m hating and I don’t like the kid. And I’ll admit his ego is offsetting to me and has been since the recruiting process. But I’m talking business here. He’s potentially the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, and NFL teams seeing this, might be wondering if he can handle the NFL and pressure emotionally. And Williams himself said lions don’t worry about sheep, but a case can be made that lions don’t show any weakness like this. The kid is an amazing talent, but the off-field stuff (painting nails, attitude, ego, and now emotional toughness) is piling up. I’ll have more on this in a separate article.

2. Nick Saban was tampering.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Some say it’s tampering, but they are morons. This is former Alabama WR Aaron Anderson, who transferred from Alabama to LSU, and it’s just a friendly post-game joke. People need to relax. Anderson isn’t being recruited. He was already at Alabama and would have a ton of hurdles to go through to go back. Nor does he want to go back. This was just Saban giving the kid crap for leaving when he’d clearly be playing a lot more at Alabama right now and would have been on the winning side.

3. Ryan Walters had the right to bypass the Jim Harbaugh handshake.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Even if Harbaugh has been cheating, Walters should have shaken his hand. The post-game handshake isn’t as sacred in college football as it is in hockey, but it’s still a big deal. It’s often with words being exchanged, and that’s fine, but to run past the man is a bit cowardly, in my opinion. Shake his hand, say what you want, and move on. Michigan doesn’t need help beating down Purdue, so Walters’ team wasn’t that affected.
