Fact or Fiction: Ohio State’s Ranking, Worst Loss of the Season, Penn State’s CFP Path

Mike Farrell on why the Buckeyes should be ranked number one, if UNC’s loss to Virginia was the worst performance…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Ohio State should be No. 1.

Farrell’s take: FACT

I don’t know why this is even a debate. The Buckeyes have beaten teams with a pulse, and no one else has. Michigan? They’re amazing but haven’t played anyone, and Georgia and Florida State don’t have wins like Ohio State can boast (Notre Dame, Penn State). Give me the Buckeyes now after a big win over the Nittany Lions.

Oct 21, 2023; Columbus, Ohio, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (18) catches the football against Penn State Nittany Lions cornerback Kalen King (4) during the third quarter at Ohio Stadium.

2. UNC’s loss to Virginia is the worst of any Power Five team this season.

Farrell’s take: FACT

I can’t explain this one. UVa is terrible, simply terrible, and their only win was against William & Mary. And they were destroyed by Tennessee and Maryland, who have both been proven to be average teams. So for UNC, undefeated and in the playoff hunt, to lose to this team is inexplicable. UNC was a double-digit favorite, and should have hung 45 on the Cavs but kept letting UVa hang around when they should have put them away in the third quarter. Just a terrible loss.

Sep 2, 2023; Charlotte, North Carolina, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Mack Brown huddles with his team during a time out during the second half against the South Carolina Gamecocks at Bank of America Stadium.

3. Penn State is out of the playoff hunt.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Penn State will need to win out and need some help from Michigan, but there’s still a chance. They only dropped three spots, and if they beat Michigan and Michigan beats Ohio State, they have a legit chance to be the Big Ten representative in the playoff since the loss to the Buckeyes was close. You never know.

Oct 21, 2023; Columbus, Ohio, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes defensive end JT Tuimoloau (44) sacks Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar (15) during the fourth quarter of their game at Ohio Stadium.
