In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Oklahoma is a legit Big 12 title contender.

Farrell’s take: FACT

I didn’t believe at the beginning of the season and thought they’d continue to struggle in year two of Brent Venables but this offense is potent as heck and the defense is playing a bit better. They still aren’t a complete football team and Texas could be a struggle if they play as well as expected but Oklahoma has a chance here if their offense continues to click. If they make this a shootout they could win and the failure down the stretch last season shouldn’t be repeated. They will likely lose three games this season but you can’t say they aren’t a contender.

Oklahoma’s Billy Bowman (5) celebrates an interception with Danny Stutsman (28) and Jeffery Johnson (77) in the first half during the Bedlam college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Oklahoma State University Cowboys (OSU) at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, in Norman, Okla., Saturday, Nov., 19, 2022.

2. Brock Bowers is the best player in college football.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Quarterbacks get all the attention and of course Caleb Williams is elite but you can’t overlook how good Bowers is overall. He’s an underrated blocker and he can play inline, flex or even outside and beat you. He bailed out UGA this past weekend and they are targeting him more than last season which is smart. Pound for pound he’s No. 1.

Sep 24, 2022; Athens, Georgia, USA; Georgia Bulldogs tight end Brock Bowers (19) runs for a touchdown against the Kent State Golden Flashes during the first quarter at Sanford Stadium.

3. Ray Davis is the most surprising transfer in football.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Nah this isn’t a huge surprise to people who follow this stuff. The Kentucky RB was elite at Temple and had a 1,000-yard season at Vanderbilt last year so his impact with the Wildcats wasn’t unseen. He’s been even better than expected and is one of the best backs in the country but while people were paying attention to the Devin Leary transfer, this one was honestly the bigger deal.

Kentucky’s Ray Davis ran past Florida’s Jason Marshall Jr. for the long touchdown Saturday afternoon. Sept. 30, 2023
