Winners

Ohio State

The Buckeyes went into South Bend and came away with a last-second win vs. Notre Dame. This was a great game that I believe lived up to the hype. A lot of people, including me, thought the Irish would win, but the Buckeyes prevailed at the end.

I was especially impressed with Kyle McCord on that last drive. He showed composure and led the offense all the way down the field. After the game, Ryan Day made sure to let one “hater” in particular, know that his team is for real.

Oregon

The Ducks silenced Deion Sanders and the Buffs on Saturday by winning 42-6. I’m not hating on Sanders or his team, but Oregon did show them that they are not ready to compete.

But this isn’t about them for now, this is about Dan Lanning and his team. They showed up hungry and dominated from the start. The offense and defense both looked elite. This Ducks team looks more physical than in previous years. We’ll really get to see how good they really are as the season moves along and they face a tough Pac-12 schedule.

The Best Way to End the Scheduling Debate

Alabama

Alabama bounced back with a win vs. a top-20 Ole Miss team. Their defense stepped up and held the Rebels to only ten points. Jalen Milroe looked calmer as he went 14/21 for 225 yards and a touchdown. He did have an interception as well, but he is showing improvement. Jase McClellan also had a big day on the ground as he racked up over 100 rushing yards.

The Crimson Tide have two straight road games coming up next vs. Mississippi State and Texas A&M. Get past them comfortably, and we think of the Texas and USF games as a fluke, not the new normal.

Sep 23, 2023; Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe (4) throws a pass against the Mississippi Rebels during the second half of a football game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Washington State

Washington State continues to impress as they knocked off fellow Pac-2 conference member, Oregon State, 38-35. This was an exciting game that saw the Beavers rally late, but the Cougs were able to hang on.

Cameron Ward was great, as he threw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. The defense looked very good as well, holding  DJ Uiagalelei to just 198 yards on a 50% completion percentage, with a pick. Wazzu heads to UCLA next week in another tough, but easily winnable conference game.

Sep 9, 2023; Pullman, Washington, USA; Washington State Cougars quarterback Cameron Ward (1) is chased out of the pocket by Wisconsin Badgers linebacker Maema Njongmeta (55) in the first half at Gesa Field at Martin Stadium.

Penn State

Penn State had their whiteout game this past weekend vs. Iowa and the crowd was not disappointed. Well, unless you made the trip from Iowa City. They were shut out and lost by thirty-one in a game that was a blowout by the third quarter.

Drew Allar threw for four touchdowns and nine different receivers caught a pass. The Nittany Lions have two tune-up games against Northwestern and UMass before heading to Columbus to face Ohio State in a huge test.

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar gets a pass off with West Virginia pressure closing in on him during the season opener at Beaver Stadium September 2, 2023, in State College.

Losers

Colorado

Before anyone gets mad, I’m not here to personally bash Coach Prime or Colorado. With that being said, they are one of the biggest losers this week. The worst part, in my opinion, is the video that Oregon posted after the game which showed Shilo Sanders and other Colorado players being disrespectful. I’m not saying that other teams don’t do that, but they rarely lose 42-6.

I think Colorado thought that they were better than they are due to the media attention they’ve received. I know they didn’t have Travis Hunter, but I don’t think that would have made much of a difference. The Buffs have another brutal test coming up this week at home vs. USC.

Iowa

Iowa’s offense looked abysmal on Saturday at Penn State. I know Penn State has an elite defense, but come on, zero points and seventy-six total yards? That is god awful and something needs to change.

Cade McNamara did not transfer to Iowa for this. Even the defense looked suspect, they allowed 215 yards on the ground and over 400 in total. They need to get it together over there in Iowa and fast.

Sep 2, 2023; Iowa City, Iowa, USA; Iowa Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz and running back Kamari Moulton (28) look on during a timeout during the second quarter against the Utah State Aggies Kinnick Stadium.

Auburn

Auburn had started off with a nice 3-0 start, but that was ruined by their 27-10 loss at Texas A&M. The game was very slow and low-scoring in the first half and then the Tigers let it get away from them in the third.

The passing game was essentially nonexistent as they only had fifty-six yards passing for the game. They continue to bring in Robbie Ashford and rotate him with Payton Thorne, but neither seems to get anything going. It won’t get any easier as the Tigers return home to face the number one-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday.

Sep 23, 2023; College Station, Texas, USA; Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze looks on during the first quarter against the Texas A&M Aggies at Kyle Field.
