Mike Farrell’s Week 3 Notebook

Mike Farrell opens his notebook from the weekend and wonders if Jalen Milroe is the answer for Alabama…

Some week three thoughts in random style.

— Alabama needs to go back to QB Jalen Milroe and run a run-oriented offense. RPOs and get Milroe out of the pocket as it’s been clear he’s not comfortable with his feet planted and can’t be accurate standing still. This can still be a dangerous offense but I have no idea why OC Tommy Rees didn’t adjust this offense to his strengths. It makes zero sense.

— Who the heck is the best team in college football? Georgia looked pedestrian, JJ McCarthy was awful for Michigan against Bowling Green, Texas was tied at 10 with Wyoming late and FSU almost lost to Boston College. The answer could be Washington who has destroyed Boise State, Tulsa, and Michigan State. None of them are good teams but they’ve been so dominant a case can be made for the Huskies. Their leading rusher has 15 total carries in three games. Everyone is dropping eight into coverage and Michael Penix Jr. still can’t be stopped. And that WR group gives Ohio State a run for their money.

Sep 2, 2023; Seattle, Washington, USA; Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. (9) passes against the Boise State Broncos during the first quarter at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium.

— Explain to me how LSU, Alabama, and Tennessee are ranked. Bama has beaten Middle Tennessee, and South Florida (barely), LSU has wins over Grambling and Mississippi State, and Tennessee has beaten a winless Virginia and Austin Peay. And each has lost by double digits to the only good teams they’ve played. SEC bias? Yep.

— No running back has helped their NFL Draft status more than Notre Dame’s Audric Estime. More known for his bodybuilder frame he’s now added more speed to his game and is impossible to tackle at 5-11 and 230. Running backs are devalued in the NFL but in the Notre Dame offense they are crucial and he’s going to be a huge reason why ND gives Ohio State trouble.

Sep 16, 2023; South Bend, Indiana, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish running back Audric Estime (7) jumps over Central Michigan Chippewas safety Elijah Rikard (21) in the fourth quarter at Notre Dame Stadium.

The Best Way to End the Scheduling Debate

— Speaking of Ohio State, I’m not sold on Kyle McCord at QB quite yet. He always had a cannon out of high school but also struggled to see the whole field at times. With so many weapons in this OSU offense, he shouldn’t be struggling with that anymore but sometimes he still is.

— Speaking of cannon arms, we all knew Joe Milton had one. But we also knew he had little to no accuracy when he had to tone it down and nothing has changed. Hendon Hooker showed the key to Josh Heupel’s offense is accuracy and not arm strength and it might be time to see Nico Iamaleava who is very accurate.

— Mike Elko needs to be the guy to replace Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M. Make this happen.
