Transfers at Texas Tech and Texas are impressing

As summer camps continue across the country, here are five transfers off to impressive starts, including one each from the Red Raiders and Longhorns

OL Rusty Staats – Texas Tech (Western Kentucky)

The skinny: Staats was brought in to anchor the Red Raiders’ offensive line at center and to this point he has left little doubt that he will accomplish this successfully. With a hardnosed, old-school mentality, he quickly earned the respect of his new teammates while showcasing the ability to successfully play at the Power Five level.

RB Treshaun Ward – Kansas State (Florida State)

The skinny: Considered one of the top available running backs during this portal cycle, Ward has not disappointed since his arrival in Manhattan. He has met all expectations and will now form what is potentially a dynamic running back duo with DJ Giddens, who averaged 5.8 yards per carry in 2022. While replacing Deuce Vaughn will still be very difficult, Ward’s performance thus far has given Wildcat fans hope that 2023 will once again bring big things to Manhattan.

DB Jalen Catalon – Texas (Arkansas)

The skinny: After a fantastic start as a true freshman in 2020, injuries derailed Catalon’s time in Arkansas in 2021 and 2022. Deciding for a fresh start, he has looked like his old self in Austin this off-season, which bodes very well for the Longhorns. A physical safety, Catalon quickly and seamlessly melded into the defensive unit. Already a team leader, he is poised for a huge season in Austin.

WR Caleb Burton – Auburn (Ohio State)

The skinny: The Tigers completely overhauled their wide receiver position through the portal during the off-season. While a couple of the additions should make an impact this fall, it is Burton who has stood out above the rest during the summer. Able to play both the slot or on the outside, he has shown quickness, impressive route running and reliable hands while developing a chemistry with new quarterback Payton Thorne.

DL Andre Carter – Indiana (Western Michigan)

The skinny: The Hoosiers, who were very active during this portal cycle, seem to have hit a home run with Carter’s addition. During the spring he was named one the team MVP’s and he has continued that dominant level of play this summer. The Hoosiers have moved him between defensive end and defensive tackle so opposing offenses can expect to see him all over the line. Carter was even recently named to the preseason watch list for the Bednarik Award, annually given to the best defensive player in college football.
