These guys are getting a lot of hype heading into the fall. Maybe a little too much.

1. Joe Milton, Tennessee

Dec 30, 2022; Miami Gardens, FL, USA; Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Joe Milton III (7) throws a pass against the Clemson Tigers during the first half of the 2022 Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium.

2. Spencer Rattler, South Carolina

Nov 26, 2022; Clemson, SC, USA; South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler (7) passes against Clemson during the first quarter at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022.

3. JJ McCarthy, Michigan

Oct 8, 2022; Bloomington, Indiana, USA; Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy (9) throws a pass during the second half against the Indiana Hoosiers at Memorial Stadium. Wolverines won 31 to 10.

4. Dillon Gabriel, Oklahoma

Oct 15, 2022; Norman, Oklahoma, USA; Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Dillon Gabriel (8) throws during the first half against the Kansas Jayhawks at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

5. Sam Hartman, Notre Dame

Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman (10) warms up during the Notre Dame Blue-Gold Spring Football game on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend.

Breakdown:

Milton has a cannon of an arm and a lot of upside, but let’s not forget he failed at Michigan and lost his job with the Vols to Hendon Hooker, so he hasn’t shown success. The late-season numbers have him rated very highly by many. To a lesser extent, the same can be said for Rattler, who is still an enigma to me. McCarthy needs to improve his accuracy for me to buy in on the hype just yet Gabriel is injury prone, and I’m not sure he’s the Heisman hopeful everyone in Norman thinks he is. And finally, I like Hartman, but I’m not sure he’ll have the same success at Notre Dame with that schedule as he did at Wake Forest.
