Transfer Portal – ACC Hot Topics

As the 2023 college football season inches closer and closer, there is plenty to discuss regarding transfers. Here are three hot topics when it comes to transfers in the ACC:

Florida State

The Seminoles were one of the more active and successful schools in the transfer portal during the 2021/2022 cycle and have continued that trend during this cycle. Both sides of the ball have added playmakers that has positioned Florida State as a viable threat to make serious noise in the ACC and nationally.

Offensively, the Seminoles added plenty of weapons to help Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Jordan Travis. Leading the way is wide receiver Keon Coleman (Michigan State) and the tight end duo of Jaheim Bell (South Carolina) and Kyle Morlock (D2 Shorter). The offensive line should also receive a needed boost from Jeremiah Byers (UTEP) and Casey Roddick (Colorado).

On the defensive side, cornerback Fentrell Cypress (Virginia) was one of the top available players during this portal cycle, while defensive linemen Darrell Jackson Jr. (Miami-Florida) and Braden Fiske (Western Michigan) should both make an immediate impact this fall.

Clemson

While top programs across the country have taken advantage of the transfer portal, it has been well documented that Clemson chose to take a different approach and focus on high school recruiting. Would that stay the same during this cycle or would the Tigers dive into the portal and plug a few holes on their roster?

Clemson quarterback Paul Tyson (12) throws during practice in Clemson in Clemson, S.C. March 29, 2023.

Despite the cries of many Clemson fans, this cycle was more of the same in Death Valley. While quarterback Paul Tyson (Arizona State) was brought in as a grad-transfer to provide some depth at the position, overall the Tigers once again have chosen to take a different route from basically every other major program. Everyone will have to wait and see if this prolonged approach will prove to be a positive or negative for the Tigers.

Louisville

With a new head coach arriving, it was expected that the Cardinals would undergo some roster upheaval during this off-season. And that is exactly what has happened, as Jeff Brohm’s pro-active approach in the transfer portal helped accomplish this task. An interesting combination of veterans and promising young players are part of this arriving group.

The Best Way to End the Scheduling Debate

On the veteran side of the things, quarterback Jack Plummer (Cal), defensive backs Cam’ron Kelly (Virginia) and Storm Duck (Penn State), offensive lineman Eric Miller (Purdue) and defensive lineman Stephen Herron (Stanford) should all be key contributors this fall.

Almost as important as the immediate contributors are the impressive young players who should be able to contribute for the next couple of seasons, including defensive back Marcus Washington (Georgia), linebacker Keith Brown (Oregon), wide receiver Jimmy Calloway (Tennessee), defensive back Devin Neal (Baylor) and quarterback Brady Allen (Purdue).
