Disappointing power programs are always fodder for discussion. These teams should be embarrassed of their recent history.
1. Texas
— The Longhorns have been set up for success forever, and you could argue they have the biggest conference advantage of anyone until they head to the SEC. And yet that can’t buy a 10-win season every few years? It’s embarrassing, and Steve Sarkisian needs to change this.

2. Miami
— I was tempted to put the ‘Canes first, but their lack of an on-campus home stadium and average facilities keep them below Texas. But since leaving the Big East, they’ve become a pedestrian program that no one seems to take seriously.

3. Florida
— Dan Mullen made a small run in 2020 as they lost a close one to Alabama in the SEC title game but let’s be real. Florida should be an elite national title contender every season with their tradition and recruiting territory, yet they’ve been subpar. Will Muschamp, Jim McElwain, Dan Mullen, and now Billy Napier have fallen well short of the Urban Meyer days.

4. Auburn
— Are they a power program? They are to me with a natty in the last 15 years and another national title game appearance as well. But the Gus Malzahn days at the end were bad, and the Bryan Harsin hire was dumb. Hugh Freeze is a good hire, but it will take time and patience for them to get back to respectable.

5. Virginia Tech
— The Hokies may be debatable as a power program, but under Frank Beamer, they scared a ton of teams. Justin Fuente was a failure, and Brent Pry had a horrible first season. They went from Michael Vick, Bryan Randall, and Tyrod Taylor to a team that couldn’t develop Hendon Hooker properly.
