People have mixed feeling about college football’s recent conference realignments and understandably so. It can hurt the schools that are left out and hurt some of the teams already in the said conference. The worst part of it in my opinion has to be the rivalries that are killed when one team moves on to another conference. We have seen it many times before and it looks like we will unfortunately see it again with one of the best rivalries in our sport.

The Bedlam series has been going on since 1904. That happened to be before Oklahoma was even a state. This game has been a circled date on the calendars of every Oklahoman since then. Oklahoma vs Oklahoma State could see its last matchup this upcoming season due to the Sooner’s move to the SEC in 2024. Both athletic directors have publicly stated that the series will end, at least for the foreseeable future, after this next matchup this upcoming season.
This obviously affects more than just football. This is the last time we’ll most likely see them play regular-season games in basketball, baseball, etc. This is a travesty for collegiate sports and for the people of Oklahoma. I’m sure there are various other factors that I am unaware of that went into the decision, but why can’t they still play as a non-conference game? Georgia plays Georgia Tech, Florida plays Florida State, Clemson plays South Carolina, so why can’t Oklahoma still play Oklahoma State? I don’t think anybody wants to see this game go, and I know for a fact that the fans of these two schools don’t.
We have seen this one too many times throughout college football history. Nebraska vs Oklahoma, Kansas vs Missouri, Texas vs Texas A&M, Texas vs Arkansas, the list goes on and on. I understand that money drives this business, but sometimes I think that comes at the expense of the fans, who should really be driving the world of college football. Hopefully, in the future, the people in charge can find a way to incorporate these great games back into teams’ yearly schedules. This is a move that would benefit the sport tremendously.
