We know that all that glitters is not gold – sometimes, it’s just a flash in the pan. I’ll take a look at some of the biggest situations in college football and determine if what’s going on is FOR REAL or if it’s FOOLS GOLD.
Pitt Panthers’ sack attack
The Panthers led the nation in sacks last year with 44 and Pat Narduzzi is a great defensive coach but this number will be reduced quite a bit. They lose their top three sack masters in Calijah Kancey, Sirvocea Dennis, and Deslin Alexandre, and that’s nearly half of those sacks. Pitt will once again be near the top of the conference in defense but I think they struggle more in the pass rush.
FOOLS GOLD

Kentucky’s stellar defense
Kentucky’s offense was dismal last season scoring the fewest points in the SEC per game. But the defense was amazing giving up only 19.1 points per game. And I think that can be sustained especially if the offense can improve slightly and keep them off the field more. Kentucky returns the majority of their key defenders and just needs some defensive linemen to step up and help the run and pass rush and they should be fine. I think that can happen and they will be one of the top defenses in the conference again.

Oregon State’s big season
A 10-3 season for Oregon State is a big deal, but the schedule next season isn’t that formidable. USC isn’t on the schedule and they get Utah and Washington at home so that’s all good. And this team is clearly better on paper next season than Arizona, Colorado, Cal, Washington State, and Stanford so the in-conference schedule is nice. Another 9-3 regular season could easily happen and this team is the real deal.
