Teams Who Need Bounce Back Seasons: Big 12

Luke Brumm dives into the teams who need bounce back seasons in the Big 12 this year.

The Big 12 is so back and forth every season. The three teams on this list all had at least eleven wins in 2021 and none of them won more than seven games in 2022. These three teams have the talent to bounce back, but will they?

Oklahoma

Oklahoma is so used to being a double-digit win team, so this past season really shocked them. The Sooners dropped from 11-2 to 6-7. This was Oklahoma’s first losing season since 1998. Coach Venables was in his first season ever as a head coach so I will cut him some slack, but he needs to bounce back and get this program back on track, especially with the SEC waiting for them in 2024.

Oklahoma State

The Cowboys are another team that is relatively used to success. They haven’t had a losing season since 2005, and they didn’t have one in 2022, but they did go 7-6. That is considered a huge disappointment considering they went 12-2 the year prior and returned their starting quarterback, Spencer Sanders. Sanders is now at Ole Miss and Oklahoma State is looking to bounce back with a new QB. We’ll see if Mike Gundy can get his team back to winning ways as he has done in the past.

Baylor

Dave Aranda was getting a lot of praise after going 12-2 and winning the Big 12 in 2021. The Bears followed that up by going 6-7 this past year. He decided to switch quarterbacks and it didn’t seem to pay off. Aranda is still a very good coach, don’t get me wrong, and I believe he has the ability to get this team back to its winning ways. The Big 12 is always wide open and will add four new teams to the mix, in Cincinnati, BYU, UCF, and Houston, so I am very interested to see how it all plays out.
