Two of these teams are historically good teams and had very good 2021 seasons and one of these teams is in dire need of resurrection and simply went from bad to worst from 2021 to 2022. Let’s take a look at who these teams are.
Michigan State
Sparty had a great season in Mel Tucker‘s second season in 2021, going 11-2. They had some momentum heading into 2022 but ended up going 5-7 and not even making a bowl game. This was obviously very disappointing, and they expected better, but they have a chance to really turn things around this upcoming season. They had a top 25 recruiting class for 2023 that should bring some optimism to East Lansing as well.

Wisconsin
Wisconsin fell from 9-4 to 7-6 from 2022 to 2023 and that resulted in the firing of head coach Paul Chryst. They went out and grabbed Luke Fickell from Cincinnati. Fickell is the first and only coach to lead a group of five teams to the College Football Playoff. He acquired some key additions through the transfer portal and looks to have found his quarterback through there as well in SMU transfer Tanner Mordecai. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the Badgers were back up to nine or ten wins in 2023.

Northwestern
Northwestern is in a tough spot right now. They’ve gone 3-9 and 1-11 in their past two seasons and long-time head coach, Pat Fitzgerald, must turn things around if he’s going to stay in charge there. Northwestern is in a similar situation to other schools such as Stanford, Cal, and Vanderbilt. They have higher academic standards for their athletes and sometimes they can’t keep up with other football programs. Hopefully, they can turn things around in the near future.
