5 Most Important Portal Additions for the 2023 Season: PAC-12

DE Jordan Burch – Oregon (South Carolina)

The skinny: It was a mixed bag of results last season for the Oregon defense, but one aspect that was consistently missing was a pass rush. The Ducks added Burch in the hopes that he would be the answer to this issue. Coming off a season when he totaled 60 tackles, 7.5 sacks and 3.5 sacks, many believe that the best is still yet to come for Burch, which could be a game-changer for Oregon’s defensive unit this fall.

QB D.J. Uiagalelei – Oregon State (Clemson)

The skinny: This transfer will be one of the most watched in the country this fall. Uiagalelei showed flashes of his potential during his time at Clemson but was never able to consistently put it together. A change of scenery was the best decision for everyone involved, so now he will have the opportunity to revitalize his collegiate career in Corvallis. At Oregon State, expectations are very high coming off a 10-3 season, especially with the Beavers returning most of their top players. Uiagalelei can be used as a game manager, but the potential is also there for him to take the Beavers to the next level.

Clemson Tigers quarterback DJ Uiagalelei (5) throws a pass over offensive lineman Walker Parks (64) during the second half against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Truist Field.

QB Shadeur Sanders – Colorado (Jackson State)

The skinny: While there was obviously no surprise that Sanders would follow his father from Jackson State to Boulder, there is plenty of intrigue regarding how he will perform at the P5 level. In two seasons against FCS competition, Sanders passed for 6,983 yards and 70 touchdowns, while completing 68% of his attempts. If he can be similarly successful with the Buffaloes, it will go a very long way in improving the program’s fortunes very quickly.

Jackson State QB Shadeur Sanders looks for an opening during its spring game at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Miss., Sunday, April 24, 2022.

RB Carson Steele – UCLA (Ball State)

The skinny: Who will replace star running back Zach Charbonnet at UCLA? Steele is the answer, and expectations are very high that he will make a huge impact in the PAC-12 this fall. Having rushed for 1,556 yards and 14 touchdowns last season, while averaging 129.7 yards per game, he is expected to be a vital piece in the Bruins’ offense. Steele also has two years of eligibility remaining so this is an addition that could help UCLA into their first season in the Big Ten.

Ball State running back Carson Steele (33) hurdles over Tennessee defensive back Warren Burrell (4) during the Tennessee vs Ball State football game in Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tenn. on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022.

WR Dorian Singer – USC (Arizona)

The skinny: Every college football fan knows that Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams is returning for one more season. And while the Trojans have a good amount of talent returning at wide receiver, they did lose Williams’ top target Jordan Addison to the NFL. The hopes at USC is that Singer will be the replacement as he arrives in Los Angeles after finishing the 2022 season with 66 receptions for 1,105 yards and six touchdowns. The opportunities will be there for him, as should the production.

Oct 29, 2022; Tucson, Arizona, USA; Arizona Wildcats wide receiver Dorian Singer (5) catches a touchdown pass against USC Trojans defensive back Calen Bullock (7) during the second half at Arizona Stadium.
