Mike Farrell gives his latest updates and intel from the recruiting trail, including why Georgia…

— Illinois RB Darrion Dupree is a lean to Notre Dame I hear with Wisconsin his second choice followed by Michigan and Purdue. The 5-11, 190 pounder has been to Notre Dame a few times and they have amped up their recruiting in the state of Illinois, an area they owned long ago. The talent in Illinois and the Chicago area has regressed greatly over its peak in the 1990s but there is talent to be had and Dupree is a great fit as a sneaky strong back who can catch the ball. Gino Guidulgi headed to ND from Wisconsin helps their cause greatly. He’s not the RB coach but he had a good relationship with Dupree. Some feel Michigan is being overlooked at No. 3 here and they could be right as their recent RB tradition is important but I still like ND for now.

— 5-star ATH Mike Matthews from Georgia appears to want to take officials this spring and summer and make a decision before his season starts. I know that Ohio State and USC will get officials as they aren’t in driving range and he will visit Clemson, Georgia, and Tennessee most likely as well. So who leads? My best guess is UGA followed by Tennessee here. Alabama is also in the mix here but not talked about as much but you can never count them out. I think distance will be a factor here so the Buckeyes and Trojans are up against it. Clemson is an interesting team as well for him as he’s a team guy and he will likely love the culture there but right now I’m not betting against Georgia even with the OC change.

— QB Jake Merklinger from GA is an interesting one to follow. Why? He’s an in-state kid with a UGA offer who likely won’t end up with the Dawgs. Why? They have Ryan Puglisi committed and are all in on Dylan Raiola as well. And I’ve heard Merklinger would prefer to be the lone QB in his class. Tennessee is interesting here and he will see them again soon but keep an eye on UNC. Jadyn Davis is their top target but he’s been a lean to Michigan forever and also likes Clemson so they are going even harder on Merklinger. He loved his visit to UNC in January and is already headed back in March. Michigan State is also in here as well as a sleeper.

— Finally, don’t believe anything you hear about Raiola visiting Nebraska recently just for fun. His uncle Donovan is the OL coach at Nebraska so some feel the visit was a family trip but Raiola is no fool and Matt Rhule is smart. Raiola attended a hoops game and the coaching staff got a lot of time with him. He’s a UGA lean and a heavy one at that with USC following them but Nebraska isn’t missing any chances to get him on campus. They feel the more he visits the better their chances as Lincoln is not a common visit destination for prospects of his caliber. I’d still give Nebraska only about a 15% chance here but trust me the more he visits the percentage will rise.

Chandler quarterback Dylan Raiola throws the ball against Corona del Sol during their game at Chandler High School on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022.
