Top-100 DL Nigel Smith out of Melissa, TX recently attended a junior day in Norman. There, he was able to show off some of his skills, as well as build relationships with some of the coaches on staff at Oklahoma. The highly touted prospect had lots of great things to say about Miguel Chavis and Todd Bates, as well as the Sooners as a whole.

“I think it was great. I enjoyed getting to sit down and talk ball with Coach Chavis and Coach Bates… The best part was talking about how they see me fitting into their team and getting to talk ball. They said they see me playing DE a lot like [Jonah Laulu] does, but being more versatile because that’s what I like to do.”

“Coach Chavis and Coach Bates, those guys are elite recruiters in their own way. They’re funny, they’re calm, they really do go together like salt and pepper.”

When asked why he chose the teams listed in his top-16, Smith stated, “I made sure I chose schools that I kept in really good contact with. I’m not going to choose a school that is not really texting me, one that I don’t feel comfortable with and can’t have a normal conversation with.”

It is currently a tightly contested race right now between all of these schools. Smith plans to commit by the first game of his high school season.
