Fact or Fiction: Kevin Steele, Brian Ferentz’s Contract, Byron Leftwich to Notre Dame

In Mike Farrell’s Fact or Fiction, he analyzes whether Kevin Steele is a good hire for Alabama…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Kevin Steele is a good hire as Alabama DC.

Farrell’s take: FACT

I’m not a huge fan of Tommy Rees for the offense but this is a solid hire for the defense. I’ve liked Steele from his days back as the head coach at Baylor and he’s had a solid previous stint at Alabama under Saban. He has a ton of experience, his defenses are athletic and play hard and he’s a solid recruiter. It’s not a sexy hire but it’s a solid one.

2. Brian Ferentz’s deal is fair.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Ugh. Ferentz is arguably the worst offensive coordinator in college football but he has that last name and now he’s down to $850K with incentives if he can score more than 25 points per game. That’s stealing money in this day and age as anyone under 25 points a game shouldn’t be coaching. And Iowa averaged 17.7 last year which was sixth worst in the Power Five. This is nepotism.

Iowa has amended Brian Ferentz's contract to be more incentive based.

3. Byron Leftwich would be a good OC hire for Notre Dame.

Farrell’s take: FACT

He’s been critiqued at times because the Tampa Bay offense hasn’t looked sharp especially this last season but this is a former college great who can say he coached Tom Brady to a Super Bowl. That always plays well in living rooms and he could help Notre Dame with much needed QB recruiting and development. He’d be a smart hire.
