Fact or Fiction: Jim Harbaugh to the Colts, Sean Clifford as a Pro, Kirby Smart’s Future

In Mike Farrell’s Fact or Fiction, he analyzes whether Jim Harbaugh will leave Michigan for the Colts…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. The Colts would be the best fit for Jim Harbaugh.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

The Colts are a mess, an absolute mess. Sure, Harbaugh played there and knows owner Jim Irsay, but that’s why he wouldn’t take the job. Irsay is just too involved and too clueless to work well with Harbaugh. And the roster in Indy is not in great shape. There are some solid players but there are issues at QB, OL and in the back end on defense that make this a major rebuild. Carolina has a better roster and despite their Russell Wilson problem, Denver is a better job as well.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh signals for a timeout in the first quarter against TCU during the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 31 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

2. Sean Clifford can be a solid pro.

Farrell’s take: FACT

I’ve been as critical of Clifford as anyone and he’s been up and down at Penn State for sure. But by solid pro I mean a career backup and he’s perfect for that. He’s smart, he’s coachable and he has game manager skills where he could keep a team afloat during a stretch of the starter goes down. I see him as a 10-year backup and he’s improved so much in his ability to throw on the run and arm strength it’s impressive.

Penn State’s Sean Clifford takes off with the ball in the second quarter against Auburn at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021, in State College.

3. Kirby Smart is the next Nick Saban.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Kirby is about to win title No. 2 in a row but that’s not the reason I think he’s the next Saban. It was how pissed he was at his team’s play in the win over Ohio State in the Peach Bowl. Smart was not happy at all despite the win over a really good team and is taking his team to task in practice this week. That’s what Saban did early and often at Alabama and continues to do. Smart learned this from Saban having coached with him for years and won’t accept anything but elite play. And he’s going to win a lot of national titles because of it.
