We’ll keep the scouting reports rolling on top prospects from across the country.

Grant Stec – TE

Algonquin, IL (Jacobs High School)

TE prospect who also competes in basketball and is receiving attention from every major Big Ten program. Very good height and adequate weight in a slender, projectable frame. Very good release against off coverage from a 2-point stance, showing very good acceleration and processing to eat ground in a hurry. Attacks the blind spot against DBs in Zone coverage. Very good separation on vertical and straight lined routes due to very good foot speed and angle awareness, creating leverage in stem and opening up throwing windows against Man and Zone. Very good body control and adjust around his frame, able to extend up high and in front and use body catches below and behind while keeping his speed and turning upfield quickly with good balance. Good zone blocker, uses his good initial quickness and acceleration to get his hat across on reach blocks consistently and moves to the second level quickly while creating angles with very good angle awareness and solid agility. Very good physical toughness and competitiveness, attacking his assignments ferociously and blocks through the whistle.

Adequate pass protection as he was rarely asked to do it in his high school’s wishbone offense. Adequate knee bend and lower body strength bring potential anchor from vertical set into question. Adequate hand placement as a run blocker, mostly relying on his good upper body strength to pummel lower level opponents but will not get by just by sheer strength in the Big Ten. Overall very good prospect who brings a safe, high floor due to his processing and experience as a blocker, allowing a smooth transition into a zone run scheme at the next level. Athletic ability and room to max out give him a very high ceiling that could lead to him becoming a major contributor for a Power 5 Offense by his third year.

Dylan Mesman – TE

Saline, MI (Saline High School)

Two-sport athlete who is garnering interest throughout the ACC and Big Ten. Good height and weight in a bulky frame with very good upper body strength. Good release from 2-point stance, fighting through contact in press and getting into his route quickly with good upper body strength and solid agility. Good separation against Man coverage on short and intermediate routes, sinking his hips at the top of the route and creating separation with solid acceleration on Linebackers and pushing by with good technique and strength against smaller DBs. Very good hands at the catch point, shows good ability to box out when contested and attack the ball with good core strength, extension and ball tracking. Good on zone run concepts, uses his good quickness and solid acceleration to cut off pursuit DEs on outside runs and shows good hand timing and placement combined with his good punch strength to get his hands inside and drive as a lead blocker from the H alignment. Good on double and drive blocks when able to get his hands in, snapping his hips through and moving his feet with good lower body strength to create movement at the point of attack and embracing contact with good competitiveness consistently.

Adequate separation on linear and vertical routes against DBs due to adequate long foot speed, not able to put stress on the defender’s technique and allows DBs to stay in backpedal and break on the ball. Adequate separation against DBs playing underneath in zone coverage, will need to improve his adequate vision and coverage processing to find voids and settle at the next level. Solid TE prospect who will be able to contribute as a blocker early due to his good play strength and physical toughness fitting the style of Big Ten play. Will need to make significant progress in receiving areas of the game, as he will be going against athletes that are able to match his physicality in contested situations.

Jacob Oden – ATH (S)

Harper Woods, MI (Harper Woods High School)

Athlete who also runs track and has collected over 40 offers throughout all Power 5 conferences. Played receiver, corner, safety and occasionally was a returner. Good height and adequate weight with longs legs and a strong upper half. Good route recognition from Zone coverage, scanning his immediate threats and triggering quickly downhill with good quickness and acceleration. Solid range from two-high and good range from underneath hook zones, using good vision and processing to pass over and match to crossing routes. Good man coverage against bigger receivers, able to stay in phase on linear routes with good foot speed. Very good ball skills, showing very good timing to disrupt at the catch point with QB vision or with back towards play due to very good ball tracking. Good run support from underneath Zone coverage, reading the play and scraping with patience and good balance while using his acceleration to take good angles on runners breaking through. Good tackler against runners of all sizes, uses good grip strength to wrap up and good lower body strength to add force to his tackles and knock ball carriers back with good competitive toughness.

Adequate Man coverage against shiftier receivers, adequate knee bend leads to adequate hip sink and explosiveness on cuts, allowing high COD route runners to get separation from him underneath and intermediate. Adequate range from single high alignment, unable to key receivers directly and needing to scan the entire field leads to delays in rolling over to help on verticals outside allowing for one on one matchups. Overall good prospect who will be able to contribute as a match-up piece in a diverse defense due to his ability to cover in man and underneath zone and should become a good starter by his third year.

Jayshawn Ross – Edge

Kansas City, MO (St. Pius High School)

Two-way player who also lined up at WR and competes in varsity basketball. Big 12 and SEC target. Good height and poor size with good upper body strength. Very good quickness off the snap, very good acceleration and stride length create very good burst when gap aligned and beating OTs to the spot consistently. Good outside speed move, uses good extension and placement to get around the edge and corner with good hip and ankle flexion while disengaging with good upper body strength and hunt the QB with very good aggressiveness. Good gap penetration front side against reach blocks, uses his very good quickness and acceleration to enter the backfield and force cutbacks. Very good pursuit, staying patient for cutbacks with solid processing and chase with good vision, COD and angle awareness. Very good tackler, wrapping up with good strength and form to bring down runners with very good physical toughness.

Adequate when man aligned and not able to build up his speed, gets stopped in his tracks and loses force due to adequate balance and lower body strength. Adequate against drive blocks and doubles as he is late to recognize the block and gets framed up and moved out of the way by second blocker due to adequate hand timing and anchor. High upside prospect who can be counted on to provide consistent pressure off the edge in gap-oriented schemes due to his high level of athleticism. Needs to fill out to be trustworthy as a frontside edge setter in a Power 5 defense.
